I Have a Friend

Have a friend in a single axle Scamp. The tires looked a little cheeky under weight. The Scamp scaled at 3400lbs. 760w solar on the roof, 3 lithium batteries, and the rest.

The tires are rated at 1750 a piece. Discount tire said there's maybe 3 more years on those tires and they're rated for 3500 combined.

Is that a true statement? I can't go into individual wheel distribution. It's two axels and loaded the way it is and it's not my rig.

Is there anything to say about it or is everything in bounds?

Look at the code on those tires. If they are close to 5 years old or more and especially in Florida, it's smart to replace them. New tires purchased preventatively are cheap compared to the potential damage to wheels and the rig if they blow on the road. That besides the inconvenience and frustration.

Suggest your friend look into higher weight rated tires, if available. Kudos for scaling rather than relying on specs!

Thank you. I forgot the age part. I'll ping her and let her know. She travels alone and I'm just helping her out via text messages. Nice woman. Not good for her to be stuck on the road somewhere.

It might be that "discount tire" shop doesn't have access to the proper tires and just blew her off. Most tires on RVs will age out long before the tread is worn down.

The age of the tire is revealed by the code stamped on the side. Year and number of the week.

In my experience if the tires rate for 3500 and the TT is at 3400 it's within normal standards.

My last two TTs were rated at 7700 lbs GVWR with two 3500 lb axles. The OEM tires were rated at 1750 lbs each. The GVWR relied on a 10% tongue weight.

I always upgraded my tires and if they would fit, the wheels as well (14" to 15").

That's just the way the industry builds them.

Single axle 3500 is okay. When replaced go to higher load range... "cheeky" could be under inflated should be at max inflation if at max load. Checking age of tires important.

I checked the air pressure under similar circumstances and it was correct, according to the sidewall. Thank though and I did mention a G rated tire - when it's time. This is not my gig. It's hers and she's free to do what ever she wants. All I can do is offer and pass on teaching and advice. She has to decide what to do with it.

Sounds like your "Friend" has just about loaded that Scamp to the Max. It's got an axle rating of 3500 pounds. I'm a little confused though, first you say single axle, the you say two axles. Scamp doesn't make a two axle trailer. With that load your "friend" should go to a "D" load rated tire, don't putt anything else in the trailer.

It is a friend with a scamp and she just bought 3 new tires when the spare would have gotten through an emergency. Too late now
