2022 Thor Miramar 37.1 Fuel Economy

We just returned from a roundtrip to Utah while towing our 2014 Ford Flex. We got an overall 7.7 mpg. That trip was a total of 1380 miles. I did drive 55 mph while in California since they have it posted along the freeways for that speed while towing and I drove 60 mph in the other states. While at 60 mph, the rpms stayed around 2200 and at 55 mph the rpms stayed at 2000 on the flat open areas. There were several climbs and descents from Anaheim Hills California to Salt Lake City Utah. Our Ford Flex weighs 4600 pounds and we used our brand new Blue Ox Tow Bar/base plate and the Demco Stay and Play Duo braking system. There was a big difference from us towing using a tow dolly with the same car and the Blue Ox Tow Bar. Musch easier using the Blue Ox System. I was very happy with the fuel economy towing our car. We have another trip back to Salt Lake City Utah just after Christmas and will compare our results.

My experience form trips to Colorado with my Tiffin Allegro was that I always got better gas milage in the mountains than I did on the open highways getting to Colorado. At the time most of the posted speeds were 55 or 65 and I did the speed limit. except in the mountains, I slowed down first because of the twisty roads. I took the curves at the speeds posted on the yellow recommended speed signs and second because the coach simply could not get back to the posted limit before the next curve, so I stopped trying. The other reason was that I spent a lot of time coasting downhill in second gear to keep my speed under control. I know that going uphill I was probably getting maybe 2mpg but going down the engine did little more than idle. In Colorado for every up there is an equal down, apparently the down segment fuel usage more than compensated for the heavy use going up. I if remember correctly I once managed 14mpg compared to 8mpg on the open highway. Also, as far could tell towing a 3900# Jeep Grand Cherokee did not make any noticeable difference in my fuel economy. If I recall correctly the sweet spot ofr the best overall fuel economy is somewhere around 45 - 50 MPH. I think my average speed in the mountains was about 40 MPH.

Sounds right- we get 8.9- 10.2 in our 3401 Aria. We travel from Washington to Utah, Ca, Oregon. Towing our Grand Cherokee. Always posted Highway so: 60-70. Idaho is 80 but I don’t do that.

Speaking of highway speed. Some manufactures limit the maximum speed you can go for the Toad. Be sure to find is there is a speed limit for your Toad.

That is in line with what we experience.
Our rig does 7.4mpg @ 65mph towing a Buick Envision.

Yep, it will be in the Toad's owners manual in the flat towing procedure. Our Sonic is limited to 65 MPH, no limit on the Colorado. Many Ford AT Toads have a 70 mph limit.

Realize that is a steady-state limit imposed by the manufacturer due to heat removal capability of the towed transmission. The Toad will not explode if you exceed it for short stretches.

we are good. no limit on the Cherokee. 63mph is a good place for mpg, usually 9.6-10.2 when not climbing our mountains.

Our Ford Flex has a 65 mph limit on flat towing. I believe it is due to heat build up in the tranny. They list that I need to start the car before towing and every 600 miles. I need to shift it to park/reverse and drive to circulate the transmission oil.
