Propane Storage on Class C

Is it safe to store a 20 lb tank in the cargo storage area while traveling or should I look for an outside option? Need tank for my Weber Q and fire pit.

For what it's worth I imagine folks haul them every day in minivans, SUV's, car trunks, etc....

Should not be an issue, most people I have seen put it in a milk crate to keep it in place and protect it a little

The question here is the safety aspect when transporting in a RV, i.e., basement storage compartment, storing upright or is it worth the risk? I am just guessing now that there are a few retired firemen in this forum that could give us all a professional answer based on actual training and experience. I have looked at a few other RV forums and see RVs that have exploded and people have been killed.

Just make sure it is ventilated storage. When I was young and foolish I put one in the back seat of my car in the summer and left it parked as I shopped for something else. When I returned to the car it was spewing out of the pressure relief!

OK, I'll pipe in but take it with a grain of salt. Spent 30 plus years in the fire service and multiple natural gas training including propane. Both can be very dangerous and high heat will be your worst enemy. Just transporting should not be a problem but I would advise you to not leave the bottle in a confined space longer than necessary especially when it's extremely hot out. Like I said this is my personal opinion and do take it with a grain of salt. Just use common sense and never forget you're carrying a bomb with you so to speak.

I keep a smallish one in the RV for the BBQ--I think its a 10lb one. So far so good...

Don't put it in the spaces behind the wheels; they get very hot.

So for those of us in SoCal, a bit of a risk leaving one in a storage bay in the basement of the RV... sitting out in the 110 degree sun, driving through the desert.... hoping we don't get T-boned by an errant driver.... These storage bays are not vented, they are made to keep moisture out...

As an alternative - add an 'extend-a-stay' tee to your rv propane...

Goes between the tank and regulator - and allows two things:

• Run RV from a portable tank to extend your stay (where the name comes from)
• Run a gas appliance from your RV propane (appliance needs its own regulator - which they would have if running off 20lb bottle already..) - just need an adapter to go from 'disposable bottle' fitting to your appliance hose.

You already carry plenty of propane - just carry some hose instead of another tank.


I've only carried an additional empty tank - for a 6 month stay where I thought I might need to supplement the RV supply - easy to fill where we were staying - and much easier than moving the RV to refill.


I regularly run my propane grill off the RV tank when camping... and recently at home when I discovered an empty portable tank when it was time to cook dinner...



If you are transporting a separate full propane tank - insure it stays upright and is ventilated...

I had one of these on my class c. It's a great solution, works well. The only downside is the limitation on grill location. Not a biggie for some, but something to consider. Now I just have a few one pound cylinders on hand but I'm not into all day smoking and barbecue. Burger, hot dog or steak is quick and easy for me.
