Average Miles Driven per Day

For you experienced pros, what is the average number of miles you drive each day on an extended trip? Getting ready to travel to Yellowstone and wanted to know how to “allocate” my days. Thanks for the help.

Just for me personally... 500 is about right.

200 to 300 miles for us we like to have time for lunch and breaks. Also in no hurry we get to stay in more places that way. You may even try a Harvest Host out in between campgrounds.

There is no rule, its really kind of an individual thing. For me, now as I get older, its fewer and fewer miles per day, really do not like driving more than 4 or five hours. Years ago, it was always 500 to 600 miles per day.

300 to 500 mile a day depending on road and weather conditions. Getting ready to drive to Iowa tomorrow. Going to allow 4 days for the trip.

For me, it's time behind the wheel, not miles. I do 2 or 3 hours, then a break. I repeat this cycle until I've driven about 8 hours. It usually works out to 300 to 350 miles.

Being a true Californian, I measure a trip in time. We never say that it is 40 miles to San Francisco. We say, it is about 45 minutes an hour.

I set my limit at 5 hours driving with a 15 min break at a rest stop. I can usually glean the information with my Garmin RV760 GPS.

About 200-300 a day. No rush and try to get to campgrounds before dark.

Completing an "Iron Butt" ride on my motorcycle when I rode a 1,000 miles in 24 hrs forever cured me of wanting to do any high mileage days. I average 250 to 300 miles.

Huge respect for your iron butt. 3-400 miles in the saddle does me in! I’m sort of old though. And my usual drive in the MH is 250 miles more or less. Since I retired I don’t hurry much any more.

300 to 500 with 500 being the max! I like to be parked and settled down well before cocktail time, and since I’m retired that’s about anytime!!!

Me either. I set the cruise at 64 and enjoy the scenery.

We did a trip to Yellowstone in 2014. it was a 790 mile run to our first overnite stop. Super Walmart Parking lot in Twin Falls, ID. I started in Central California at 4am and finished around 11pm in my 32' Fleetwood Class C. My breaks were sitting at the Costco gas stations and Pilot Travel centers. It was tough but we wanted to maximize our time in Yellowstone. Not sure I would volunteer to do that again. Once I retire years from now things will be different. Maybe there will be self driving RV's by then!!

When I was little (1982) I drove my conversion van 1,700 miles and 27 hours straight from Jamestown, ND to Atlanta so I could make my daughter's first birthday (they were visiting family). That gave me brain damage and I still feel it today. I'm with 'captmetal' on driving at night. Much less traffic and most people on the road including truckers on the long haul are courteous and move with an even flow. 300 miles a day with a few rest stops in rest areas, etc. make for a good day. My new rule...if i have to hurry to get somewhere it's somewhere I have time to postpone.

We try to plan for 400 miles max. On our recent cross country trip from Arizona to New York we had some legs over 400 miles but also some under 300 miles. Our goal is to always stop in daylight. We learned the hard way that pulling into campgrounds at night can be dangerous (as in not being well lit and having curvy, hilly roads and no visibility!)

Not to mention meeting your new neighbors at 1:00AM...in their pajamas with glowing red eyes.

Mileage traveled depends on the nature of the trip...
If we've just got to make time: we leave early; minimize stops and breaks, and find that we can cover over 500 miles easily...
Otherwise: we use about the same tactics, and look to score about 400 miles in a day...

We’re retired, so not in a hurry. We usually plan for 200 to 250 miles per day. On a travel day, we will usually get up and have a leisurely breakfast, hit the road with a couple of stops in between, and then arrive at our destination in time for a cocktail or two before dinner. Works for us.
