I rarely use it either. Mostly I don’t like all the downshifting when you tap the brakes in traffic and such. I do use it in the mountains or long downgrades.

I have an old workhorse chassis that has a 496cid chevy V8 with an Allison Tranny.
When going through the mountains, I felt I needed more power, too. I looked at Banks and didn't want to do all the work. I found Ultra RV Products in New Jersey. They sell computer upgrades for the workhorse and the Ford V10 used in almost all new MHs.
I bought one and installed it in about 10 minutes. Three bolts and a connector. Right under the engine cover. I figure I only realized about 30 HP and about 30 ft-lbs of torque but my gas mileage went from 7 mpg to 8.5. I got 9.4 in the low country last fall. The difference in mileage paid for the computer in one summer. It also runs smoother and starts easier. I paid $575 for the thing and I totally recommend them.

I like the kickdown so much I had it electronically added to my 3/4ton Avalanche.
My 8.1L(496ci) has the 485 trans, not the 480.
Big block Chevys respond well to computers, like 100hp well in some cases. Ford V10 Does not... at all. Nothing outside of laboratory specs can be found for a Ford V10.


So, I'm not against electronic engine mods, I'm against snake oil, seat of the pants and $2,500 five hp gains in the name of performance. And that's what's available for a Ford V10. Even the dual turbo install linked in my signature thread adds only better than 100hp.

Buy a Diesel pusher with 400 hp or so...I save the extra 100k and push my v10 up the hills with my foot...

Getting a reasonable running start before hitting the incline helps a bit, too.
We've seen too many rigs roasting down to the ground after a hard uphill climb just over the summit due to an aggressive right foot and not enough preventive maintenance.


Let your temp gauge be your guide climbing the long passes-whenever I see the temp start to climb I back off the pedal to ease the temp back to normal operating temperature. You're not missing anything going slower up those hills so that's the time to grab your drink and enjoy the view!

Well you could strap one of these babys on but I don't recommend it.

From past experience, I have found that putting in a clean air filter really improved hill climb, especially at altitude. I usually pull a small cargo trailer with a trike. I use the tow/haul most of the time.
