body separation Super C

Have any of you Super C owners experience the fiberglass cab over separating from the Ford F550 roof? Just drove up from Seneca s.c. to Connecticut. First noticed cold air blowing in above my head when driving. After getting here on inspected the cab over and found I can lift it off the truck roof.

Just this week I was able to tour the Super C Plant 450. One of the things I wanted to see was how they cut out the roof and attached the overhead cap for a JIC moment. I will do my best to sketch a diagram of what I saw. I will point out the area to look into. It's the only place it attaches to the roof in that area. I will post it in this thread.

I had some issues. The seam was not sway very good. Also the vertical seam between cap and MH body was not sealed properly- especially the driver’s side where the slide cover support is attached.

If you cut a shoe box in half and imagine the box is the area of your truck cab and the lid is the Thor cap...the cap sets over the "aluminum channel" just as the shoe box lid sets over the box and rest on the truck cab roof. Fasteners are installed from the inside, horizontally along the padded area where your privacy curtain fasteners are. If you can remove the decorative trim from this area, you might be able to access the area where the fasteners are (or are missing). I didn't get to see how the aluminum channel is attached to the truck roof but I would imagine it's from the inside with fasteners in a vertical position, up into the aluminum channel. There is also flat trim installed along the roof across the front and both sides where the cap meets the body. Hope this helps...have you called CS to see if they can send you a drawing specific to the attachment process of your unit?

Thanks Gritz, I appreciate you describing the construction of this cap.
I haven't called Thor yet but I will.
Last night when I got to CT I was able to physically lift the cap, and with a flashlight I was able to see wood strips attached to the cap with a zigzag pattern of adhesive on the bottom of the wood. Didn't recall seeing aluminum channel.

This morning I tried lifting it again, but it wouldn't budge.
Funny thing is when I was in Indiana at thor the tech pointed out that they needed to resilicone that joint between the roof and cap. Wasn't even on my repair list. Maybe he knew something I didn't.

Thanks again

Unlike the stapling of cabinetry, I'm certain this is a significant engineering process and someone at Thor should be able to provide you with the detailed schematics of how it is installed. Please let us know what you find out from Thor and good luck with it.

Gritz, I removed the trim from inside, but you can't see anything.
A cross member on the truck roof blocks your vision.
But TMC reached out to me.
Suggest I bring rig to authorize dealer.
But these dealers are so busy they can't get me in till January just for a look.
So playing it by ear now.
Lots rain scheduled here in CT. for Friday.
I going to have to seal it. Before I get water damage inside.
I appreciate all your input thought.

Clear Silicone would be best sealant for temp use as its easy to remove.

You would think that TMC would consider this a High Priority Issue? They should have a local dealer contact you for an IMMEDIATE SOLUTION?
January is not acceptable for this type of issue....

If there's an upside to this, its the fact that the huge cap covers the entire truck cab. Runoff from rain drips down the sides, over the cab with very little chance it will make it to this area. Even when running down the highway, the "wind tunnel" developed by this cap deflects large amounts of rain from reaching up under the cap and making its way uphill to this area. If it were a roof issue it would be much different. Sealing this area temporarily will help protect what little water intrusion is possible. January is only two weeks away. Attitude has everything to do with sanity and I think his attitude is in check.

Hey Gritz, when I was applying the silicone before these heavy rains came I noticed the driver side seam blew out, probably from the wind pressureizing the shell. And a crack going down to the slide. I took a couple of pics.
Thor did schedule me in to Wakarusa...
Thanks

It will be so much worth your time than going to a dealership. When are you going...I'll fill you in with all the details?

They set me up for February...
Was there in July 2017 for a week. We brought are Jeep,. Went to Michiga n lakes dunes etc.
This time I'm wondering if we will need a hotel. Should they have really to do some deconstructing and they keep. It inside this time.
Maybe they can finish the issues they didn't have time to do last time.
Thanks
ED K

I would imagine this is gonna be a few day thing. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express up 19 about 6 miles in Elkhart. One thing they do is jump right on the project and don't stop till it's done. They had mine in and out in less than 2 days. Their designs change from year to year based on "what they've learned". The cap to body mounting system for 2019 has changed in a few places since mine wad made in 2018. The vertical sides of the cap now wraps around the body a little more. This may be n the area where you see the cracking on side. If you end up staying in town, for sure go to the RV/MH Hall of Fame. They have an original condition old GMC plus every model "camper" that's ever been made, including an old Conestoga Wagon. Amazing how far thing have come. It will be interesting to find out what they discover in yours. My guess would be fasteners not installed or loose...working themselves apart. They've been manufacturing C Class caps for years so it's not a new design.

Thanks, ya i been to the museum, pretty much everything, like I said we were there for a week. We even visited other motor home manufacturing places, funny they all had RVs waiting to be repaired also. I'll have to check on the Holiday inn, for dog friendly Ness. You know if my dog can't go I don't go.

I just purchased a super c last month, has anyone else noticed the top of the back panel has "puckers" (or dents) ?? every unit i looked at before i bought mine had the same, the salesman at camping world said it was the way they installed the panel at the factory, i didn't buy mine from them. Is this a design flaw as like i said everyone i looked at was the same-- mine is a 2017

Are you referring to the rear end cap?
