Brass plug on water heater

I don't believe a PVC plug can take the heat. Only use the nylon plugs.

Some folks use an anti-seize compound

I have heard some stories of folks not being able to get their TPMS sensors off their tire valves due to galvanic corrosion. I know Tire Minder has 2 different sensors, one brass for use on brass or steel valve stems and the other is aluminum for use on aluminum valve stems. When I order my replacement TPMS (TM-77) earlier this year I made sure I ordered the system with brass sensors.

I purchase a boat cover for our boat from the manufacturer a few years ago. The boat rails are aluminum...the snaps they sent were stainless steel. At each point of contact, the two dissimilar metal started to corrode. They made it good and switched their connectors to a different type. Dissimilar metals do not breed pretty babies.

I've used plumbers pipe compound for years without any issues. It seals and lubricates at the same time.

I bought the proper size hex driver with an extension and keep it in the RV

I admire that you could even get to your plug to change it! I wanted to drain my Freedom Elite HE tank, but the plastic plug is behind a pipe. I know many people use a socket wrench, but that dang pipe is just right in they way! There is probably only an inch between the top of the plug and the pipe, so every socket I looked at wouldn't fit in there. Poor design!

This site is great for getting advice! I will be buying some of the plugs to keep for emergencies.

Brass is a neutral metal that doesn't react with other metals as any plumber would tell you! So you are safe with brass...steel or copper could cause problems, but I believe the threads that the plug threads into are plastic ,alsoHi if that's the case you could use anything!

Camco (I think) sells a cheap stamped steel wrench bent just so it gets around the obstruction. It’s such a cheap tool that it comes with extra nylon plugs to justify the $5 price! But it works fine.

Same issue on both the Challenger and now the Accolade, however, I found there is enough flex, or wiggle room to allow me to put a deep well socket on the plug and then attach a ratchet or breaker bar. Be gentle and it will work.

As a note a 6 point socket is best to use on the plug because a 12 point tends to round off the plug. Now if I could just remember where I put the 12 point socket after the last Challenger winterization.

Oh well, tool shopping time.
