I lived in my last Class C for a full, albeit Texas, winter. My home was flooded by a freak storm on Halloween of 2015. We were luckier than some as we could live in our camper while rebuilding. Anyway, after insurance claims, government meddling and the lack of contractors due to the amount of homes being worked on, it was almost Thanksgiving before work began. We lived in the camper parked in our driveway until the work was completed in April. We mostly used electric heaters for warmth. Keeping the inside of the camper warm kept the plumbing working. Having the hose to connect 20 lb bottles to the fill nozzle of the coach's tank kept the propane appliances going. We kept the water tank filled and on really cold night disconnected the hose. That winter taught me a lot about cold weather camping and I have no fear of doing it now.

My idea of "Cold Weather Camping"; is when the Missus relents, and fianally hugs up close to me...

After that: it's time to Winterize the rig, and go watch Football in the house!

I can't watch football. I have an aversion to snowflake unicorn spoiled brats with a propensity to seek out safe places to kneel and protest how mistreated they are while drawing multi million dollar salary's.

They don't do that in college football; at least the drawing multi-million dollar salary's (er except for the coaches).

One additional consideration at -20 below and colder is that as propane evaporates from the tank during heavy use, it cools the tank. You can reach a point at these temps where the liquid propane will not evaporate and remains liquid. Of course, at this point anything using propane stops with no pressure. The smaller the tank, the more this is applicable. The short term solution is to use glowing hot (no flame) charcoal brickettes in a small metal grill below the tank. Needless to say, this requires constant monitoring. The point is that you cannot totally depend upon any one system being reliable.

Let's try this

My wife and a small dog we are also preparing to do this for this winter in Canada ( Québec ) in a 34' Thor Pinnacle 1994
We've been watching a lot of youtube video about how some guy's do it this as well, ouce: we din't want to regretted our steps.
We are looking to buy a Cubic mini woodstove but they are not garanti and not recommend this product in Québec in a RV
Then we wish you all good luck for this winter.

Hey!!! What gives? I read thru the entire thread without the benefit of popcorn & y'all were just getting to the best part - the after action report - but there is none! What The Fruitcake? I can't stand the cliffhanger. Oh, the horror! Did our intrepid winter camper by choice survive his challenge??? C'mon M@tt, I'm an accidental winter camper of two months thus far & wish I wasn't (my own fault, tho), but your story was hot enuff to warm my toes - or at least make me forget them for a while - please tell us the rest of the tale!

Ohhkkay...So, now we need to come up with an alternative to end the story with since we didn't get to hear it from M@tt himself! C'mon guys, I'm countin on you, tell me a great bedtime story of the frozen wilds & the mighty untrepid Thor winter campers!

Donners type will work, but I lived in California at times & toured the Sacramento fort too many times, so that story is old news for me.

Y'all are very creative & I bet each of you could come up with a great story in your own unique styles.

So - did they survive, or not? Did they meet their challenges heroically or chicken out? Y'all decide. I'll make sure Radar & I have popcorn ready this evening! Thanks guys [emoji624] [emoji433] [emoji190] [emoji39]

Yeah, I took a motor home to Klamath falls, Or. In 95. And it snowed and snowed and snowed. It snowed so much that the gym at the Elementary school collapsed at nite. Then about two weeks later the roof at J C Penny's in the mall collapsed. Fortunately no loss of life either place but I got lots of training driving in snow and using tire chains. Finally we found a house to live there cause of the cold. It is pretty up there in the spring through the fall, just in the winter, not so much.

I agree avoid it if you are just going for recreation, the tent wont freeze up

We have been in quite a few temps down to zero or a bit lower and the diesel burner runs full time plus we usually use the fireplace in the morning to get up to 70 or so.

Going to cost a lot for heat and is it worth it? You can easily go through a couple small tanks of propane a day and if you have windy conditions you arn't going to have fun
