The crime is that spume like cat thieves have a place to sell them.
Get off our ass and ask your local police how in the hell scrap yards are allowed to buy them.
It has almost nothing to do with the opportunist thief.
The thief only steals those things of value. He sure isn't stealing your windshield.
The value is created by your local government.
Please look up
glazier's fallacy
It's a plan in effect, right now.

I agree with you ducksface. If the scrap yards are not allowed to buy them and/or resale them, the problem of the thefts will end. As long as there is a way to sale them there will thefts.

Initially, most DUI schools and privately owned probation services were developed and silently owned by judges and attorneys. They designed the system for themselves. Maybe there's a bad cop or two in the high volume areas of converter thefts that are getting kickbacks.

Crooks will just move to a black mcarket. The Prescious metals inside is the culprit. Manufacturers need to move to a different material which will completely stop it.

Or design chassis’s such that they are difficult or impossible to remove. Wouldn’t be foolproof but it would cause the bad guys to seek easier targets.

And cause exhaust shops to double or triple the cost of repairs.
The innocent victim will once again be the one paying the price

Not to worry. Few people need to replace converters in normal use. Or head pipes. Typically repairs only are needed downstream of the converter. I’d be willing to bear the risk of higher costs. My converter theft sucked. Out loud.

They used to hang horse thieves in this country. People would show up from miles around to watch a good hanging. Just sayin'

I so very much agree!
Justice should be swift, severe, and certain!

When living in the Springfield MO area sevyears back converter theft appeared
The only time it made news was if a Church or non profit got hit
One theif also got crushed but no arrest ever over several years
Many cargo trailers stolen and again no arrest
Lots if high end tools stolen and few recovered
Skid steers stolen and vanished
We have a social societal issue that isn't getting better
If you follow what is going on around you then you know the solution will take time and it is important that you either get invor dtay involved
Thieves already steel batteries out of EV's so is secuing the converter really the solution?
