It's not the wattage, it's the voltage. The 50 amp Cheap Heat has the elements wired for 240VAC across L1 and L2. If it's a 30 amp generator, it only outputs a single leg of 120VAC, so there will be 0VAC across L1 and L2 of a 50 amp RV (the 2 hot legs are jumpered together to function as a single hot bus on 30 amp service). Therefore, the Cheap Heat elements are not going to heat.

This same situation faces any 50 amp RV that has 240VAC appliances installed (e.g., clothes dryers, etc.). While they will work on properly wired split phase center tap neutral 50 amp service, they won't on 30 amp service.

Electric cheaper for me

Every year we go to Texas to visit relatives for a month or two. A couple of years ago we got a late start and ended up staying in North Central Texas during the months of Nov and Dec. The temps were mostly below freezing and we had a 37 ft pace arrow at that time with a extend a stay, and 2 extra 20 lb propane bottles.. During the month of Nov I was going through a 20 Lb bottle of propane every 4 days at $17 to $22 a bottle depending on where I bought it. It cost me $134 for propane during November, and $31 for Electric for a total of $165 for propane and Electric. A fellow RVer who was next door mentioned that he used 2 portable electric heaters to heat his trailer and that it was much cheaper than propane. I bought a couple of portable heaters and plugged them in for the month of December. My total electric bill for 28 days of December was $60 and my propane bill was $44 for a total of $104 a saving of $61 over the previous month. So for me the Electric was cheaper.
