Carefree Travel'r Awning Direct Response

If you coach is equipped with the Carefree Travel'r Power Awning this thread may be of interest to you.

After doing some research on the Travel'r awning installed on my Challenger I found that OEMs can elect to install an optional motion (wind) sensor on this model awning. Thor did not elect to install that option on the Challenger.

I contacted Carefree and the Direct Response kit (part number SR0093) is available to upgrade existing installations of the Travel'r awning. The Direct Response kit, after installation, will automatically retract the awning during windy conditions. From what I can determine there are three sensitivity settings (Low, Med and High). The kit also includes a one touch extend and retract switch which eliminates the need for holding the switch to full extension or retraction. According to Carefree the kit is 110.00 plus 15.00 S&H and can be ordered from them directly.

Although I never leave my awning extended while I am away from the coach, after seeing some awning carnage to other folks after a sudden thunderstorm in Florida in January I believe 125.00 and a couple of hours of effort is a cheap insurance policy.

Getting the wiring out to the awning may be a challenge.

Here's the service manual:

Bruce,

You are correct, however looking at the arms for my awning, I believe the harder part will be getting the wire into the coach and to the existing switch location. The current switch location is in a cabinet above the entry door. Also, I will need, at a minimum, a 10 or 12 foot step ladder.

I plan an checking it thoroughly before purchasing the kit. I may decide to have a carefree dealer do the install. There is one with mobile service about 10 miles from the house.

Also, here is the manual for the Direct Response Kit itself.

This is very timely information. I can attest to the fact that 125.00 would be cheap. On Sunday I was in my niece's house with the coach right outside. A sudden thunderstorm popped up and I lost the awning. Now waiting to get somewhere for a few weeks to get it replaced. I will probably add this then.

Willis,

Sorry to hear that.

If you go to Carefree's site www.carefreeofcolorado.com you may be able to find a service center close to a travel destination. With a little prior planning they may have what is needed available when you get there resulting in a shorter repair time. In my case the closest dealer is a bus shop that repairs Prevost and Newmar coaches as well as touring buses. They are not an RV dealer and only perform on-site and mobile service.

Last year after my Class C's awning deployed while traveling 55MPH on I-95 (talk about a drivability experience) the coach was out of commission for 2 months just waiting for a service appointment at a Dometic authorized dealer. Since the problem was the result of a Dometic failure and covered under a recall I had no choice in location of repair. It had to be done by a Dometic dealer which happened to be RV service centers and they were all swamped with 2 month waiting lists.

Other than that, how is the trip going?

Yes I had searched and found a dealer in Amarillo where are going next. They even have some in stock, but no bigger than 18'. Mine is 21. An order would take about a week to get in and we won't be there that long. So I am looking at the Phoenix area dealers now. I will talk to them when we get there.

Wow. I am glad that didn't happen to us. That'll wake you up.

Trip is going good. So far going from Ga. We have stayed in truck stops. Used the genet yesterday for a few hours and the then the batteries lasted all night. So that is going better. So far really enjoying the coach and driving it is nice. Currently in Arkansas.
