Old Smokey

I have a 2015 Thor Citations Sprinter with a diesel powered generator. When I start the generator there's always quite a bit of white smoke, so much so that I stopped using it when other campers were anywhere close. Eventually the visible exhaust clears.

I've also noticed what appears to be soot or carbon residue on the inside of the hatch that covers the generator compartment.

I've only owned propane generators in the past. Is this smoke, smell and soot normal or should I get to the shop before the warranty expires?

Ed,

I'm not an expert but normally white smoke from a diesel engine is an indication of raw fuel entering the exhaust system. Back during my active duty days we had smoke generators on our vehicles which functioned by shooting raw diesel into the hot exhaust pipe (after the muffler).

The soot or carbon residue could be an indication of an exhaust leak or the exhaust pipe not running out of the coach far enough.

Again, I'm no expert.
