I had a similar problem on my 1996 Allegro. When driving in the mountains, Colorado in the summer, the generator would just quit and refuse to restart. The model generator did not have a cover like more modern units. the generator was also located just behind the Drivers side front wheel and in the air wash of the heat coming from the main engine radiator and exhaust system heat. The door latches allowed me to latch the generator compartment door open and that helped the problem if I remembered to open it before starting uphill. That is a little unacceptable so, I cut a hole in the generator compartment door and added an aftermarket electric fan that I could turn on form the driver's seat. That helped a lot but did not completely solve the issue, the true problem was that Tiffin / Allegro did not do enough to shield the generator form the engine and exhaust heat.
