Is it good to exercise?

Is it good to exercise the hydraulic levelers once a month? Even in the winter?

I recently installed Big Foot levelers and I keep my RV inside a well insulated storage unit. I check on it once a week when weather is nice (and im in town) and about once every other week in the wintertime.

I have only used my levelers a few times (still very new to me) in testing only. A few test with several days of deployed to check for leaks.

I have read pros and cons on leaving them DOWN all the time and I opt to leave mine up (retracted).

But Im thinking it might be a good Idea to exercise them ones a month and either leave down for 30 min or so or perhaps a day or two then retract??

What do you think?

I think the more systems you can exercise on a regular basis the better. In a perfect world you should exercise your generator, transmission, tires, disc brakes, chassis and roof A/C, refrigerator and furnace on at least a monthly basis. Your levelers and it’s hydraulic system have seals that need to stay lubricated and pliable. I know the world is not perfect. Storage situations limit many owners from taking their coach out on the road monthly.

I run my gen once a month for an hour or so with ac on. While thats running i lower the jacks then raise them. The up/down movement helps the seals or at least thats what i been told

I say do it. It doesn't hurt anything and not doing it could

when left down for a period hit the shafts with drylube. that's what bigfoot told me. they also said doesn't matter if left up or down. I keep mine down but not full weight just enough to take some psi off the tires

I’ve spent 5 or 6 months at one time. I wipe cylinders down with ATF before I retract them, but I leave them down until I’m ready to travel. I kept one old Winnebago 15 years and never had a problem

Did you do anything to prepare for or clean the sand from your bold and daring venture on the beach or wherever the heck it was? I assume it was not Mars, but you sound like the kind of guy that if you can get a RTV up there; you would take your RV.

Good to know. I try to drive mine every other week when weather is nice - but I might go 4 weeks in the winter depending on weather so im not really worried about flat spots on my tires.

I also park on firm rubber mats to help with flat spots and to keep the concrete floor from sucking the life out of the tires.

The rubber mats I use are firm enough that they DONT deform from the tires but much softer than a rubber mud flap. I always park on them when in storage.

dkoldman I spray the shafts with a Teflon dry lube before I head out for a trip and they stay clean
