That Horrid Noise!

Hi all,
Semi-recent purchase of a used 2016 Thor Ace. I never thought I would own anything other then a Class C., but here I am (actually never owned any before, but used my parent old C for a bit). So much to learn. Already a few hard knocks, but my biggest challenge has been WHY is there that horrid noise? Was fine, then not fine. Finally able to figure out that screeching sound, which is similar to nails on a chalkboard, was happening when it was raining.

What is it and why and how in the heck do you eliminate it.

Any help greatly appreciated. So loud, I couldn’t listen to music or anything. Gave me a headache.

Thanks much and look forward to learning about this beautiful RV.
Jennifer

Welcome to thwe forum, and congratulations on your purchase!
A screeching sound in the rain?
Could it be the serpentine belt getting wet, and it's slipping a little bit?

Welcome to the site.

Were you driving or just sitting? High speed? (Wind noise through the grille, perhaps if you were driving.)

I eliminated that noise in my coach(mostly).
It was coming from the passenger seat and sometimes the drivers seat.

I bought her a pillow for her back.
It's just as shrill but not quite as loud.

We will need more information about when the noise occurs(driving, sitting with the engine on, parked) and where it sounds like it is coming from(engine area, cab area, rear coach area, passenger or driver side).

Let me see if i can re-create the noise for you. Your driving in the rain, at about 45mph there is a horrible screech coming from the front of the coach. You’ve check all the windows. Nothing seem to effect the sound other than slowing down!. If this fits the scenario then its most likely your grill material! Thor’s fix for the noise was to sent me a some new grill material to fit behind the original grill. It had much smaller openings and once i installed it the noise stopped!

Good suggestions. I'll add another. A fan belt, or one of the other belts, can make a horrid screech, under certain conditions and be normal most of the time.

Might also be the windshield wiper linkage. Although you’d maybe think it would be obvious if it was only with the wipers. I’m a vote for the serpentine belt idea too.

That noise, or irritating whistle, is infamous in my ‘08 Hurricane. They call it the Hurricane whistle apparently! It only happens in the rain and seems to be caused by the combination of wind and rain coming through the front grill. At certain highway speeds. I recently purchased a roll of inexpensive black screen material (used to replace a screen on a screen door ). I have t installed it yet, but I intend to use small zip ties and install it on the engine side of the front grill.

ACE Noise

I have an 2016 ACE 29.3, I had the same issue as you with the singing monkeys. I put some Black Gorilla Tape on the inside of the grill screen on the driver side covering about 6” towards center. Immediately the noise stopped.

Noise

It's your grill! Get the replacement mesh screen from Thor, a very easy fix and the problem is gone. I put up with the issue for two years, tried all the other suggestions first without success. I just couldn't see how the original grill could cause that noise, which was horrible in the rain. With everything else eliminated I switch the grill and sound was gone!

Cheers

You're wasting your electrons: the OP has not been back to this website since he/she posted the question. It's kinda hard to help someone that doesn't bother paying attention to responses to their question.

Yep, Jusjay is correct. I have a 2016 ACE and mine did the same thing. Only when it rains. The Thor provided insert did the trick.

So about that screeching noise from the front end when it's raining. After a LOT of research I found out that the sound does not come from the grill nor the wheels nor the windows. What is happening is the v-10 engine is inhaling water thru the air cleaner scoop. The filter gets wet, allowing air (in tiny spots ) to bypass the filter causing a horrible screeching noise when wet. The fix is simple. Go to home depot ,purchase a 3" ductwork elbow and duct tape it to the air cleaner scoop, so that the engine is drawing air from a higher point in the engine compartment. ford had a service note concerning this a few years ago. Hope this helps.

Is this only on the ace v10. My axis v10 doesn’t do it. If Ford had a message about it, did they also issue a recall
