House Battery Charging Questions

2015 Thor ACE 27.1

When on just battery power the control panel is showing 1 or 2 red lights.

When connected to shore power the control panel shows 4 red lights (which I believe confirms that shore power is charging the house batteries).

When on the road driving, the control panel is not showing all 4 lights red (I believe this would confirm that my chassis alternator is not charging the house batteries).

When boondocking, if my house batteries are too low to start the generator, the emergency start switch can (and does) start the generator off the chassis battery (new to me because my previous Class B+ would not cross connect in both directions as far as I know).

I understand there is a solenoid that could be preventing the alternator from charging the house batteries when on the road. Do we feel the above indications is enough to go ahead and replace that solenoid or do we need to put a voltmeter on it to further troubleshoot.

Thanks

The solenoid that provides the charging capability from the alternator is the same one the "Emergency Start" switch activates - thus, the solenoid appears to work in your case. BUT, that solenoid is controlled by a BIRD that may not be working or has a bad connection.

Sounds like time you headed down to Harbor Freight and got a cheap multimeter and then go to YouTube university to learn how to use it so you have some more useful troubleshooting information than the simple LEDs on the panel - which you did use properly to get you to this point.

Thanks Ted,
Time to blow off the cobwebs. I have a 45 year neglected BS in ElecTechnology. Use it or lose it they say, and I lost that skill/interest decades ago. But I do have a multimeter so I’m going to get into the battery bay and see if I can spark that interest again.

The BIRD and Trombetta solenoid should both be in the battery bay towards the inside of the MH, forward area. I moved mine for better access without rewiring to a plywood false wall on the front of my battery compartment.
