Most HOV lanes are on the left. Yes, if you're talking about HOV lanes that are NOT on the left, that makes a difference. In my experience and area 90% of HOV lanes are also the left or "fast" lane.

Maybe the OP should clarify if he's talking about an HOV lane on the left or the right. It DOES make a difference.

First, I'll apologize for letting my tongue transfer to my fingers and getting the best of me. we're all adults (at least our licenses say so) and we (I) should act like them. To credit Turner...yes, it's legal. The signs clearly state 2 passenger minimum, Alternative Fueled Vehicles, motorcycles and buses. Sometimes, logic and common sense should prevail. Not to long ago I witnessed a 2500 pulling a 5th wheel in the HOV lane through Atlanta at 5:45PM. He was trying to keep up with the fluctuating 20-30-40-50-60, then back to 20 in 3 seconds traffic. He misjudged his distance and had to take to the emergency lane to the left (not much lane). Subsequently, the entire side of his truck and 5th wheel took a dirt nap along the concrete wall. While he was able to drive away, he left pieces of molding and trim behind. Expensive mistake!! I couldn't help but laugh at his stupidity and impatience. To poke along in an HOV lane in an RV (just because you can), especially during rush hour traffic, borders ignorance...unless it's the middle of the night in which, why would you need to use them anyway. I prefer to stay right, drive slow and foremost...avoid downtown, rush hour traffic...anywhere. So, there you have it...yes it's legal...but don't be stupid!! "It's your RV...Wreck It Anywhere You Want To"! You may be old but don't drive like it!!

I live in California and quite often travel from the high desert to the cost.
I travel the hov and toll lanes often throughout southern california and especially in the general Los Angeles area to avoid the heaviest stop and go.
It is wonderful especially the toll roads they can reduce travel time by hours.

Good luck and safe travels

According to the California Drivers Manual speeding is unlawful period. There is no such thing as a “fast lane” unless it is posted with a higher speed than the other lanes, something I have not encountered in 57 years of driving. Cops aren’t judges so if you get a ticket for doing the speed limit take it to court. I bet the ticketing officer doesn’t show up. On the other hand do what you need to do to be safe. Also in the state of California the speed limit is 55 for three or more axles everywhere.

The HOV lane can be almost as erratic but doing 10-30 mph next to the other lanes. I do not know where you are from but maybe it's different where you are or normally travel. I found it easier to drive across the US than to drive in congested areas in California.
What's an HOV lane?

I'm pretty sure all vehicles are human occupied (except for a few driverless car test vehicles) these days.

HOV = High Occupancy Vehicles, but yeah the carpool lanes.

And therein lies the problem. So why do many states prohibit trucks with 3 or more axles in the left lane of a 6 lane (3 each way) Interstate Highway?

The left lanes are fast lanes (or faster lanes) just as the right lanes are slow lanes (or slower lanes). They all have the same speed LIMIT but not everyone travels at the limit; some travel faster, like 5 mph above, some travel slower, like 5 mph below. Don't confuse limit enforcement with the good and orderly flow of traffic.

Keep right except to pass.
Slower traffic keep right.

Have you seen those phrases in your 57 years of driving?

Totally agree. If you are pulling a toad, no way. I have seen delivery trucks with two morons in the cab. They impede traffic. Buses travel at high speed seem to do ok.

I've seen when a truck passed me at 20 mph faster than me, then got in front of me in the right hand lane, then went into the ditch and up the other side to the access road and accellerated on his way. Luck was with him that day because nobody got hit, but I was trying to remember where my first aid kit was. Ok. city is dangerous. Young folks, old folks, rush hours, people late for work, lane changes, construction cut offs, right hand lane has to get off... you name it.

California LAW=ANYTHING TOWING ANYTHING IS LIMITED TO 55MPH and RIGHT LANES> STATE LAW Ever see a semi using the HOA lanes with 3 people inside? No, because it's against the law. And common sense.

So that means that my Class C rig is perfectly legal in the HOV lane...
