If you have an inverter you can run the fridge on that while on the road, just be sure you don’t leave it on when you stop or it will run the batteries down.

Some searching and I see mention over 10 years ago about such a law in California... but nothing that actually cites the law.
Would be interesting to see the actual statute... and whether it applies to commercial vehicles only or RV's etc...
You will get strong comments on both sides whether it is 'safe' to do or should be done... Many (myself included) do run with propane on to run fridge... but my RV has never seen California.

But what if your generator ran off propane? Wait, what about the LNG vehicles?

While traveling we talk "where to next" instead "what if"! The "what it's" will drive you nuts if that's all you think about.
We've owned 6-8 rvs, 3 different ones in the last 10 years, towed 125k+/- in the last 10 years & the fridge was set to "auto" the entire time, Yep even while fueling, was only switched off the defrost.

NO such law that I am aware of or heard of here in CA. Drove from SoCal to Yellowstone, to Montana and back to SoCal with the refrigerator on Auto without running the generator. No issues.

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/co...df?MOD=AJPERES This is from CA DMV and it cites several vehicle code sections on RVs. Nothing about restricting propane use. Just general information.

We’ll be in CA in the spring and I’ll have my fridge running on propane like always. IF there is a law against it it’s going to be on “them” to catch me and enforce it. My fridge is not far from the gas fill but it’s usually running on propane when I fill up. Hope I don’t blow up!

We have a plethora of laws but don't think this is one to give much thought because it doesn't exist as far as I can tell by research.

Cant Find the Regulation
I did some research after my initial post and cannot find the regulation anywhere either. This is an amazing urban myth - even my dealer bought into it and told me to run my generator while driving.
After reading the comments here I am just going to run my fridge off propane only while driving like I have been doing. Thanks you all for your thoughts and insights.

I was watching "GoingRV" a couple of Months ago, and I seem to recall a question about running propane while driving through a tunnel.
I believe the answer, was that you should keep yourself aware of ALL of the rules and regulations about this.
(Some allow it: some don't... )

There is now a new law in California concerning propane. Apparently moonbeam and a couple of legislators read this forum. All vehicles utilizing propane will have a pilot vehicle in advance and following whenever this environmentally hateful, hazardous and soon hopefully outlawed despicable fuel is ignited. Daily permits are required for the propane use ($58/day) as well as additional special propane escort permits ($7.16/mile). Welcome to California! Visit often!

I come into town, have cell service and this is the discussion I respond to. Back to the no cell service woods now. See y'all in a week or so.

EXACTLY WHAT LARRY posted ... put the switch on AUTO ... presuming you hookup in the drive way before leaving home (we hookup for at least a day before travel, so refrig is nice and cold..and in doing so, you can load it at your convenience once it is cold)...in doing this you will be running on shore power...when you disconnect from shore power, it automatically goes to gas (propane) **make sure your propane tank is sufficiently full** ... when you hookup to shore power once again...it switches back ... you can verify with the lights on the switch panel on the refrig. BE SURE, TO TURN REFRIG TO OFF WHEN YOU ARE NOT USING IT ... AND PROP THE DOORS OPEN SO NO MOLD WILL GROW IN IT.
