Thanks, mine does start while plugged in, but didn't know about the load. Probably best to unplug!

Check your operators manual. My Onan says the generator should NEVER be started while connected to shore power; and to do so could cause serious damage to the generator and/or electrical components.

If you have a transfer switch, wouldn't it choose generator or line but not both?

Actually a side question.... I wonder which takes priority???

I would check the operators manual. I don't have a transfer switch.

Another side question while on the generator subject: Do you prime your generator each time before starting? My 4000 seems to be hesitant in firing off unless I prime it and I think I flood it sometimes. Also, do you leave the elevation setting at the minimum unless you are in higher altitudes?

I have the 4000 also. Never primed it; usually takes 4-5 switch clicks to get it started. Others that have this model say that's typical-the 4000 is notoriously "cold-blooded".
Never adjusted the altitude setting.

With mine, I can turn on the generator when plugged in, but when I do, the shore power is simulataneously disconnected. That's a safey feature as well as convenience.
They suggest not doing it, but it is supposed to be okay.
You can imagine If something goes awry and the switch off fails, and you have both systems going, something is going to go bang in a very unpleasant way I think.
