Does the Jenson shut down completely? Try turning off the Bluetooth on the phone and see what it does.

More likely a botched Android Auto implementation when he plugs into the USB to charge the phone. Bluetooth is wireless and he would have to have paired the phone with the Jensen and it would happen anytime he was within range, not when he plugged it into the USB port.

I know. My phone when plugged up to the USB port with Bluetooth turned on has caused me problems with the goofy radio in the past.
Another idea, try to charge something else from that USB, tablet or some other device that uses USB to take a charge and see if it affects the radio. That way should be an indication of whether it's a problem with USB or the phone. I'm betting a problem with the phone.

The USB may not be a charging port but rather a USB in port which is trying to play something off the phone

And every USB port has to supply at least 500 ma of power - it's part of the standard.

It thought I'd post this just as a supplement for the op.
Charging a USB is not a thing to worry about on some single port giving you a bit of trouble.

My cell phone camera choked on chicken bone or something so no pictures.
But
I've had one of these built into the dash of my overlander since about the week USB hit the market, and I carry one in each vehicle.
I'm sure they're so much better than 10 or so years ago when i bought mine. Some double sided tape and it's in a spot you pick on or under the dash.
(or go to post 119 in my build thread.)
https://www.thorforums.com/forums/sh...&postcount=119

Once the op figures it out, buy one of these or buy what's in my build thread.
Some plug into a USB, some plug into 12v,some are one way with no data.

If you are trying to use the micro USB port on the Jensen, that is for software updates to the radio and not for charging anything.

^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^

In my previous rig, the USB port on the dashboard was only for feeding data from my phone into the radio, and did not charge the phone.

I've got one of them in my Smart. They call it a, "data transfer port".

On my 2015 Challenger the USB port on the dash was an input to the radio and did not provide enough juice to charge anything.

The same applies to the USB port on my 2020 Accolade. It provides input into the radio to be played through the USB option and it does not provide enough juice to charge the phone connected.

Also, in 2016 Thor did not provide radios equipped with Apple or Android anything on most of their rigs.

Newer USB ports and protocols may require ports to supply power but that was not the case on earlier USB protocols. Many USB drives and USB ports required a separate power cord to power the device or it wouldn't work. I am in the. process of getting rid of a bunch of that earlier crap now in an effort to get rid of the junk.

The port that I believe the OP is talking about is the port that has two receptacles combined. A USP on top and an a HDMI on bottom.
Both communicate to the radio.
On my 2017 ACE. That USB port will charge. But, apps from the phone can interfere with the radio.
I don't remember exactly what I did. I think turning off Bluetooth solved the problem when charging my phone from that port ceased interference with the radio.

The best option for charging something, cell phone, etc. is one of the cigarette lighter adapters that has two USB charge ports. Plug that into the port just beside and away you go.

The USB 1.0 standard was implemented in 1996. It has 4 pins. The inner pins are for data, the outer pins supply 5 VDC. The specifications for a USB 1.0 and 2.0 standard downstream port, delivers up to 500 mA or 0.5A. USB 2 cranked that up and USB 3 cranked it up even more.

You can't transfer data without powering the data device which is why there is 5 VDC in the USB standard. That flash drive can't power itself. Of course, to use a more power hungry device with USB, such as early external USB hard drives, you needed to supply more than .5 amps. This was normally supplied by an external power source but some USB hard drives came with a special dual USB cord: One USB was for power and data and the other was for power only. That way the USB hard drive could use up to 1 amp from the PC's USB ports.

So yeah, that USB port on the dash, connected to the radio or not, can supply at least 5 VDC at .5 amp for charging. Your modern phone may laugh at that pittance of power but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

The Jensen in our 2014 ACE also 'goes to sleep' after a short time connected to a phone. The radio screen 'locks' and the cameras no longer work. The cure I have found is to switch the power to 'store' and unhook shore power (engine is off too). The radio operates as before after powering back up.
