Location of BIM on Axis

Where is the BIM located in a 2022 Axis 24.3?

The Thor schematic shows it on the driver's side, but i don't know if it's on the fire wall in the engine compartment or forward under the dash.

We are upgrading to Lithium batteries and according to the schematic the factory installed BIM is not a Li-BIM.

Thanks in advance.

Under the hood, drivers side. Trace the big battery cables.

It is very easy to find as it is just in front of the driver’s side wheel well and very accessible if you need to swap the chassis and house battery leads.

What do the electrical diagrams for your RV at the Thor Owners Resource website say you have? Thor switched back to BIRD/IRDs at some point.

Which was a lousy decision IMHO. Other than bad wiring by Thor, I have seen no complaints about the BIM. Lots of failures of the BIRD/IRD reported here though.

David

But it's not the BIRD/IRD that fails; it's the connecting solenoid they control that fails.

And when you can't get a BIM160 or BIM225 to install, the BIRD/IRD is the next cheapest choice.

How may Bird/IRD installs donít have failures? Had the Challenger for over five years and it never failed. Failures reported on this or any forum are in no way shape or form and indication of high, medium or low failure rates.

As you said it is your opinion.

Sorry for my ineptitude. I am registered for the above and have my coach info input, but where do I get the diagrams? I have put electrical diagram and even just diagram in the search but get nothing.

Actually anything I can get is pretty generic under knowledge.

Under MY MOTORHOME all I get is a component serial number list. No BIM or IRD on it.

For my 2021 Axis, in the Thor database for my model, there is a file “Axis-Vegas Scematics”. When I download and open it, there is an image labeled “12 volt power distribution, dual battery” about halfway down that file. It clearly shows the BIM, although the wring for terminal A and B is shown backwards.

If you have the BIRD/Trombetta, I am not sure what it will show, probably just the Trombetta relay, and not the BIRD part.

After a quick scan of the documentation for my 2018 ACE 30.3 I found nothing that definitively identifies the location of the BIM in my coach beyond a statement saying it is located near / in the battery bay or in the engine bay. I doubt your doc will be any better. In my case I have a BIM located in the back of the battery bay. I have not attempted to see if I have a BIM 160 or 225. In order to replace mine I would need to remove the House batteries. I do expect that if you had a BIRD or IRD there would be doc about that for your VIN instead of doc about a BIM.

Thank you. I have the schematic and apparently we have a solenoid and a BIRD. No wonder I couldn't find the BIM. Back to the drawing board. . .

P.S. The original schematic I had indicating a BIM was provided by Thor Customer Service Help Line.

OK, so a new search begins. There is a thread here started by a young lady (can't remember the Username) that documented changing from a BIRD to a LiBIM (if I remember right) in an Axis/Vegas (I think) that may also document where the BIRD/IRD was found. I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT:

Found it! See it this thread helps:

Unfortunately, not on an Axis/Vegas, but you can see what you are looking for in the first linked picture.

Very informative.

This project got a lot more involved in order for the system to operate as we want. We were hoping it could be accomplished by swapping out the BIM. Unfortunately this is not the case. Components have to be added or replaced with upgrades. This level of electrical work is beyond our comfort level, so we have opted to engage a professional.

Your input was definitely appreciated.

The LiFePO4 batteries leads to replacing the converter...

Then you realize you probably need a combo inverter/charger...

Followed by a Li-BIM 225 to prevent the extra amperage draw when charging the low resistance lithium batteries from toasting your alternator...

Dang it! Now everything needs re-cabled with heavier cable and appropriate fuses...

OUCH! My wallet just caught fire!!

Lol! Li-Po batteries are not necessarily the best option in some cases; AGM batteries are just fine for me.
