Great trip

Just finished a 1454 mile trip to the Outer Banks. I averaged 10.3mpg towing our 4 door Jeep Rubicon. This was in the mountains and flatland. Not a single issue with the coach. Absolutely fantastic trip! Only negative was no gas available so we didn't get to do a couple things we wanted to. No worries, that leaves them for next time!

Glad to read about a trouble-free trip!
Would you do it again?

We stayed at OBX Campground in Kill Devil Hills. Great campground with very very large sites. 2 miles off the main drag. Very quiet, several sites backup to the marshes.

The Wright Brothers National Park is adjacent to the road to the campground.

Several campgrounds around but OBX had the largest sites by far. Not really set up if you have kids and looking for stuff for them to do at the campground. Pics of campsite and our "backyard".

Yes we would do it again. Mainly now we know where we would focus our time. (and my daughter and son n law live 2 1/2 hours from there).

To be honest, loved the campground but we are not big fans of the "tourist beach scene". Would stay at the campground again. Loved getting out of the main drag and toward Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Neat small towns along the way. Also really like the town of Manteo and there was a drive through Wild Life Nature Reserve about 10 miles from Manteo. A group of Jeepers were at our campground and did a ride north to see the wild horses on the beach. By that time we had burned up all our gas so had to pass on that.

OBX is great. We went back in 2010 (Camp Hatteras).

Good to hear you had a good trip.

When we go there we stay further down at Camp Hatteras in Waves/Rodanthe. Two areas, one on the ocean the other across the road is on the sound.

Warning, check the wind conditions before going across the Oregon Inlet. High winds on the bridge are white knuckle experiences.

We saw those on the way to Hatteras. Funny you mentioned wind crossing the Oregon Inlet bridge. Very strong wind the day we went down to Hatteras. Told my wife glad we were in the jeep and not the motorhome as it might have been interesting.

next time: try the fantastic Ocracoke Island, which is only accessible by FERRY from Hatteras, and is a FREE ride, for both you and YOUR motorhome, around the Inlet CRAB SPAWNING Sanctuary. While there is the Ocracoke Campground, give the small RV PARK in town a look, too, as everything is then in walking or biking distance - TEETER'S full hookup CAMPGROUND, also right next to the BRITISH CEMETERY.
There are other ferries that come to the island from either Cedar Island or Swan Quarter, those are NOT free, and very pricey.

A special call out to OBX Campground. We left 2 days early as we were unable to get gas and our toad was on empty so we left and spent another day with my daughter.

OBX just called and issued me a refund for those two days. I actually told the lady it wasn't necessary as we had reserved and could have stayed, that it was our choice to leave. She insisted on the refund.
