Onan start switch light

I have a 2010 Damon challenger. The generator start switch red light stays lit at all times also the remote switch on dash. This is when it is not running. Generator will start and runs fine

Welcome to the forum. It would be helpful to provide the specific model etc for your generator, but on my 4kw Onan gen the "status" +12v lamp/LED line is connected to the generator control board. I don't have a schematic for the control board but someone on the forum may have it or could provide it.

So either the control board has an internal failure/short which only affects the status lamps/LEDs on remote and local gen start switches, or the status line has a short to some 12v source external to the control board.....which does not affect the control board apparently becuase you say the gen starts and runs normally. I would bet on bad control board.....easiest to change (but probably not cheap).

Just a followup.....my 2013 ACE coach does not have an AGS (automatic Gen Start) system, but if yours does there "may" be some issues with that unit affecting your gen status lamp/LEDs being on all the time. Maybe do some gen controller unit shopping and wait for other folks to comment before actually purchasing. In my coach, if no other work had been done recently in or around the gen start/stop switches (remote or local) that could cause the status lamps issue, then I would probably buy a new control board......but you might have a very different wiring configuration in your coach/gen. Just don't want you spending big bucks if there is some other explanation the forum can suggest first.

I've been thinking about this problem again, which could still wind up being a flakey gen control board, but what if there was a bad remote gen switch or damaged/shorted wire in the remote connect cable between the generator mounted start switch and the remote switch in your dash? You said the gen starts and stops normally though so likely not the remote switch. That leaves wiring harness as a possible problem. I wonder what happens if you disconnect the remote start/stop connect cable at the generator to see if the lamp/LEDs turn off (certainly the remote lamp should turn off but does the gen located lamp turn off ? If not then it has to be the control board. It would be interesting to see if you can see any obvious issues with the control board (that can be repaired instead of buying a new board). Also I have read (not certain) that Onan may not work on your gen if it has a 3rd part control board in it. I don't know if that's true, but it may be something more to consider. Let us know how things turn out.
