2107 Chateau 26B

I am looking into buying a 2017 Chateau 26B only 9600 miles. I wanted to see if anyone has any experiences with them good or bad. This will be my first motorhome purchase so looking for any information I can get. Also any concerns with a class C itself, eg.. sound, driving.

Thanks In advance for any help

Rich

2017 Chateau 26B reply

I have a 2018 Freedom Elite 26HE with the E-350. It is pretty much the same unit as yours. I have about 9,000 miles. Once all the bugs have been worked out, it is a perfect motor-home for 2 people and a dog. Not too big and not too small, just the right size. Basement storage is limited but adequate. It also can easily pull a small car. The most I have driven it in one day is 440 miles.

I've got the 2018 Four Winds 26B equivalent on an E350 chassis which derates the GCVW to 18,500. The 2017 is actually a better deal on the E450 and it's 22,000 GCVW but there is really minimal difference between the two. I've got 18,000+ miles on mine. I've towed a trailer with my UTV, a trailer with my convertible, and an Equinox 4 down behind it without any issues. It's not a diesel so it revs a lot of RPMs getting up and down the Rocky Mountains but it gets the job done. We've also done some travels without anything in tow which is nice because you can boondock easily and stay in most parks and campgrounds. I like the layout for the two of us and a dog. We removed the bathroom door and installed a curtain / curtain rod setup to be a little more space efficient. We also leave the ladder and center open in the overhead bunk for headroom and ease of travel. It's not as quiet as some since you're revving a big V10 but I've not found it to be a big deal. We did have numerous rattles to work through but that's true of most units. Gas mileage is about 8 mpg on average. Buying used you will want to check the fiberglass at the bottom on both sides behind the driver and passenger side on what is referred to as the wings for rot as there is a known issue with this area on some units not properly sealed from the factory. Good luck and happy travels.

We also had our front end aligned at a Ford Commercial truck shop and it drives fantastic on the highway!

Weight Limitations.

On another thread, some Thor owners are concerned about the limited weight capacity of the E-350. There is a yellow sticker on the inside driver door. Mine is 1,493 lbs. Use that to figure out how much cargo you plan to carry. That includes people, water, dishes, etc…

The 2017 should be significantly higher since it should be an E450 chassis. I scaled mine loaded at 12,440 last year which does not concern me even though it's on the E350 chassis.

Weight

Does anyone know the dry weight on the 26B? On the E-450 the GVW is 14,500

Which a good point was brought up about loading this vehicle.

There should be a yellow sticker in the cab which will give the “as built” weight of your coach - as well as the allowable loading and towing weights. On most coaches it’s near he drivers seat. On my 26 HE it was in the passenger side foot well. Didn’t know it was there for the longest time! Go figure.

We've had our 2017 Chateau 26B on the Ford E-450 chassis for almost 2 years and 16,000 miles. We haven't had any issues with it that were not taken care of my the initial warranty. (front cab leak, almost dead house battery). We are a family of 4. Only thing I wish it had more of was storage space. We tow a 2007 Prius on a Tow Dolly. No issue with towing. I will admit that I have not had ours weighed yet, just no time in the beginning of trips after fully packing it.

Unless you are carrying around loaded weight benches inside, according to the weight that Airforceret provided for his 2018, you are going to have a tough time getting it past the 14,500 pound GVW I think.
