Thorton Chip Tuning - does it really work

I came across this

https://www.thortonchiptuning.com/pr...formance-chip/

Not so much interested in getting more HP out of my RV - but getting better mpg would be really nice. Wonder if they work and if they are safe for the engine. Would it void my warranty ?

Thank you

Just based on their marketing, I wouldn't trust it. Each 'level' claims more HP *AND* better fuel mileage...

They claim it will not void warranty: "Absolutely not. Our tuning chip will not void any warranties. If you have a very strict underwriter on your warranty you can simply unplug the unit before taking your vehicle in for service with no traces and install it later."

IMO you'll get better mileage increases by adjusting your driving style.

HP requires fuel, more HP more fuel.
If by some small chance your mileage improved it would likely take about 20 years of that improvement to recoup the cost of most any of the "plug n play" mods.

Ha anything that claims that you get 5 miles more per gallon and only costs 90.00 dollars is clearly a scam. Apparently they know something that Nelson Performance and Blackbear don’t know.

Aerodynamics don't make much difference at speeds of 55 mph or less but weight does. Cat Performance tables show a 4,200 lb car requires 25 wheel hp @ 65 mph; where as, a 24,000lb coach requires 90 hp @ 65 mph and a 40,000 lb coach 160 hp

If it was that simple you would think that Ford would do it to their engines. Why not have more power and better mileage? Probably would affect the emissions also.

5 star tuning is great, but the truth is and the best bang for your buck is the shifting parameters that 5 star has. I have one and should know. There are little to no horse power gains that are going to happen with a V-10 and over 20,000 lbs. The tune pays for istself in the fact that your motorhome doesn't downshift at the slightest increment of an uphill climb, but when it does it does so by down shifting one gear at a time instead of the stock tune. Also this, it's all null and void when the cruise control is on, so one way or the other it sux. Having said this I still like the tune because I prefer not to use cruise control and I have double insulated my engine cover. So now I can now hear the DW and don't have to say what all of the time. Old, deaf and stupid is no way to have to live. LOL
