Just bought a Thor Majestic 23A (2012) Class C. Checked out the manual and I need some confirmation from some owners out there. I'm a little nervous around LP gas, as a tank exploded once in my backyard. The manual indicates that the tiny "service valve" is the on/off dial. Clockwise to shut off and counterclockwise to turn on. Is that correct? I played with that valve just a little and when I turned it slightly counter clockwise I smelled some gas. Is that normal?

Those are the correct ways to turn the valve. If you smelled propane shut it of IMMEDIATELY and get professional assistance! If the is a propane dealer near you they should be able to help. PLEASE do use your propane until you are sure your leak is corrected.

How tiny a valve did you turn? Not the one that you need a screw driver to open? (that one is the bleeder and thus you would smell propane if you opened it)

The on/off valve on our tank looks like any other valve (like a water spigot on the side of our house) and is "hand sized".

Thank You JamieGeek. I had a gut feeling that I was turning the wrong valve and I was turning the bleeder valve. I've got it now and I thank you again. The uncomfortable feeling is gone and now I'm pretty confident about everything I need to use.

Always open the main valve slowly, to quick & the safety valve will shut off the flow. Also there should never to a need for you to open the bleeder unless filling it.

As long as you have your ASME tank (not a DOT bottle) filled by a knowable person, they will open the bleeder screw before filling the tank. ASME tanks usually do not a over-fill protection device installed. Some gas will always escape from the bleeder screw and that is normal. When liquid starts to spit out of the bleeder, the tank is 85% full. That is as full as you need the tank, so as to allow for expansion. Person filling the tank should use the remote switch to turn off the fill pump and close the fill line before closing the bleeder screw.

The proper tank filling procedure is to turn off every propane device in the coach and to turn off the propane to the coach at the tank valve before refiling. Obviously, the generator and engine should not be running during the filling procedure. It is not uncommon to have to intercede at a campground, as some re-fillers are not properly trained.

After refueling I always that the bleeder screw is tightly closed and then the propane back on before latching the access door.
