Poor mud flap design causes tires to blow out.

Mud Flaps have caused 6 flat tires in the past two years on our 2015 Four Winds Super C. During the warranty period both sets of back tires were flattened because the front mud flaps got caught up between tires causing blow outs, flat tires, and severed air lines to inside tire. Today it happened again. It's not only the cost of the tires, and field repair, but also the time, which resulted in losing a night's stay at the RV park we had booked for tonight. We can see that the mud flap is intended to protect the propane tank, and now with today's disaster, the propane tank's wiring is exposed. Is there a better solution that protects the integrity of the tires, the propane tank, not to mention myself, and my husband?

I had a similar problem on one of my other coaches. I fastened a piece of 1/8" stainless steel cable to the bottom center of each flap, ran the cable up at an angle to the frame and fastened it to the frame with a slight amount of tension to pull the flap away from the tires slightly. No way for the flap to get in the tires now.

You could also look for heavier and stiffer flaps, your factory flaps might be to flimsy to stay down properly.

Have never heard of mud flaps causing blow outs in all my years of RVing. Not once.

In my case it didn't cause a blowout but the flap did get up in the wheels several times before my fix. I've never heard of flaps causing a blowout either, I would think the flap would just get chewed up. Guess anything is possible!

Happened to us on our 2017 Freedom Elite 26HE. Not a blowout but the flap blew back into the dual wheel and got all chewed up. No apparent damage to tires. It was an easy fix and Thor sent me the OEM parts promptly with no fuss. Excellent support, notwithstanding that it probably shouldn't have come loose in the first place. I was not aware that this flap thing was an issue so I just put it back the way it was. It would be easy to provide additional support however..

The Axis/Vegas units have the opposite problem: On the passenger side the mudflaps sometimes go backwards into the exhaust pipe and melt.

I solved the issue with some mudflap weights (same ones that heavy truckers use). Not sure this would help here as the weights could also run up over the tire and probably cause more damage than just the mudflap alone.

What did you end up doing if anything. I just got back from a 4,200 mile road trip, at we smelled rubber burning. We have a Four Winds 31E. Turns out it was the forward flaps on the rear tires rubbing. Looking to replace/prevent future issues.
