Of course I try to avoid those situations which is often easy on an interstate gas station, but in rural areas, you may not have a choice of a lot of stations.

Dinghy towing vs. dolly towing just makes it easier should you discover yourself in such a situation.

Members,
My wife and I have come to the conclusion that our problems with the transmission erupt almost entirely when we've just towed the vehicle and then re-connected the battery, causing the transmission to go back into learning mode. If there were some way to retain the prior learning, it would greatly reduce shifting issues (in our opinions.

At one thime there was an adapter that used a 9 volt battery that you would plug into the cigar lighter. This would keep the memory of the computer going until you were able to repair the car or truck. Other wise you woulld have to tow the unit to a dealer and have it reprogram. It is called a memory adapter. The only thing you need to do is to make certain that the interior lights do not come on when the door is opened, and if you have a hood lamp that is disconnected. If no the little 9 volt battery will have a heart attack and short out, and you will lose the memory

I have a 2014 Ford Focus 5 speed. We tow ours with the ACME dolly. No issues and no disconnecting wires...

The manual for the focus does state...

When done towing, start the engine within 15 minutes of reconnecting

the battery cable. When reconnecting that cable, tighten it until it is

snug against the terminal. Be careful not to over-tighten.

I assume you are doing that....

This is the exact reason I have a 5 speed manual transmission! Have been towing 4 wheels down for three years now and no problems at all. No battery disconnect, just hook up and go.

No problems with my Fiesta!

Members,
I am very pleased to report that Athens Ford finally fixed our transmission issue! It seems that Ford must have created new software to control the shifting. Now our 2014 Focus drives like a dream. We think it is a great choice as a toad, now.
