Posts and Pictures

A new member was having problems with putting pictures with his posts and a long time member had never used the "Insert Image" feature and needed a tutorial so that prompts this thread. This tutorial covers the Desktop site interface - the APP or mobile site interfaces will be slightly different.

There are two ways to put a picture with a post:

In the Advanced Editor there is an Insert Image button that allows you to insert an image that is hosted on a publically accessible internet site.

This only works if you have the URL to the image itself; it does not work if the URL is to a page wit the image on it.

Good URL - <https://www.thorforums.com/forums/members/7035-albums443-picture1988.png>

Bad URL - <https://www.thorforums.com/forums/members/7035-albums443-picture1988.html>

The image is inserted in line with the text of the post at the point of the cursor.

Once you press the button a pop-up dialog box prompts you to type or paste the picture URL:

After clicking OK you will see this is the text area of the post:

The picture will show up in the post:

The second method is to ATTACH a picture to your post. This also works with other files such as PDFs. These files must reside on your PC.

Again, from the Advanced Editor interface, you will now select the Paper Clip icon.

This opens a pop-up page where you can choose files on your PC that you want to attach.

After selecting these files you must click the UPLOAD button to actually attach them to the post. Then you can click the "Close this window button".

The attached files will show up at the end of the post.

But Ted, what if I have pictures on my PC that I want to INSERT into a post?

Well, conveniently, this Forum can host your pictures in an album that is publicly accessible.
You will need to click on the User CP link in the brown menu bar at the top-left of the page and then click the "Pictures and Albums" link.

Here you can ADD a new Picture Album.

Make sure you make the album PUBLIC.

Once the album is added you can now upload pictures to it from your PC 3 at a time.

Don't forget to click the UPLOAD button. Once uploaded you will be given the opportunity to name the pictures and add comments before you Save Changes.

Now you have an album of pictures that you can insert into your posts. To insert one of the pictures; click on it. You will see this page:

With the "Picture URL" (BAD - Don't use)
and the BB Code. Click on the BB Code to select it, copy it, and paste it straight into your post - no need to use the "Insert Image" button.

This inserts that picture into the post.

This has been discussed numerous times with the fix posted as well.

Cliff Notes answer:

Camera orientation data is included as part of the image metadata (EXIF data).
The forum uses that information to be "smarter than you" to determine how to orient the image.

Fixed by editing the image (any edit such as a simple crop) in the orientation you want and saving the change before uploading to the Forum.

Rule of thumb is DON'T takes pictures with your phone in vertical format... unless of course you mount your TVs with the long dimension vertical... OR unless you're shooting video for TicToc or a YouTube short.

Thanks for you opinion. Take pictures how you want to take them.

Sorry... I guess I'm old school. However, it does lend insight as to why pics are "sideways". But as you say... to each their own.
