15 Amp to 50 Amp RV Power Cord Plug Adapter

Just passing this on in case anyone is interested.....

I ordered this 15 Amp to 50 Amp RV Power Cord Plug Adapter from Amazon so I could just use a regular extension cord and 15A outlet if I wanted to have some shore power for charging batteries, etc. without having to pull out the monster 50A shower power cable.

I installed an onboard EMS so I can easily see how much current I am drawing so not too worried about using a 15A outlet and won't be running the A/C with it, etc.

So far it works great and seem to be very well constructed for the price. Right now you can get it for $20 with the online coupon.

I think that my 30 amp cable weighs about twice as much as your 50 amp setup...
Every year: it gets worse!

I bought one late in the summer and it's been great for quick stops in front of the house for a day or two when I want to keep the fridge cold.

I carry two of those dogbones: 30 to 50, and 30 to 15...
I want to be able to grab some power anywhere!

I carry those two but ALSO a 50 to 30 and a 50 to 20. Started carrying these after I had an inoperative 30A one trip and needed more than the 20A that I was left with. The 50 to 20 is because I like to use a separate 20A hookup for my space heater (or a portable air conditioner which I never have had to use) and more than once the 20A connection at the pedestal has been trash.

My first official mods where to order Camco's 50 to 30 amp and 50 to 20/15 amp dog bones. My coach has the 50 amp hardwired to internal transfer switch and surge protector. So the dogbones are simple add on to 30 amp or 20 amp sources. I also have power management system so the coach auto detects your power source and will allow you to use power accordingly. This is really great if you wish to drink and not worry about about how much power you have; should you NOT be running generator or 50 amp service.

Off subject, but I since I know you are a Good Sams and insurance guy, you may appreciate that I cancelled my original RV insurance to today in favor of a Good Sams policy with Progressive. I have Progressive for my Boat & Motorcycles and got even a better deal with Good Sams for Progressive RV. Full Replacement along with 100k/300k liability, roadside assistance is what I look for.

Disclaimer for the Off Subject Police....

This is important in the event I have cheap 50 to 15 amp dogbone that catches on fire and burns my new RV. I need full replacement cost NOT actual cash value.

I have the 30 amp Thor Axis and use the 15/30 adaptor for the shore power when
I have the RV in my garage which works great for keeping the batteries up and if
I need the lights on for working on stuff or pre-cooling the refrigerator prior to a trip. I use the 30 amp cable but leave it coiled up so no big deal on that.

Lucky Dog, I paid twice that, and it does work great. Have my motor home plugged in with that adapter while being stored.

If you like them:
I've got mine insured through Safeco; with an agreed value of $140,000.
In this game: ACV coverage is for the uninitiated...

I just use my mother in law. She holds the cable in her "store bought teeth" and pedals a stationary bike. Charges them batteries right up.

Dumb question... while these are great to allow you to plug in with a normal extension cord, how do you provide surge protection? My surge protector has the blades 50a male and female.

Ideally: it gets plugged in at the pedestal.
But in the real World: you plug it in where you can.

I do the same.
I want to have power when it is available. But...I do keep the generator serviced, exercised and ready to perform when needed.

True - but doesn’t 5e surge protector have the bladed 50a? Where in the pic would the 15-50a dog bone be installed?

It at the post in the pic, you’d be plugging in as depicted...

Sorry, just trying to wrap my head around the 15-50dogbone placement where your RV is still protected...

I would plug in the 50 amp surge protector at the 50 amp power cord's connection to the dogbone...

As a commercial electrician I would advise against leaving wires coiled up. This creates a "choke" on your power causing heat at the coils. Even with insulated cables the EMF will build in the coil creating resistance and heat. A coil of wire is basically a transformer without a core. If you were to take a steel bar and put in in tbe middle of that coil you will read voltage off the bar in accordance with your turns ratio (how many coils of wire around the 1 bar ie 4-5 to 1) when you take that rod out it builds what we call a choke which limits the flow of amperage in high voltage circuits. They also work in low voltage but are not used as often or are just called resistors. These create heat and can damage your insulation. Anyway Im blabbering.
Have a good day

I would imagine that running a couple of lights, or powering the refrigerator; won't be building too much heat in a 30 amp coable..
But I do agree with you! don't leave it coiled-up: if you plan on giving it a real workout!
