2017 Chateau 23U. Removed barrel chair and built storage unit.

Goal: Allow passenger seat to recline and supply additional storage space.
About ½ of the time, I am out by myself. The other half is with the other half. Never been on a trip with more that two people. Seems like the barrel chair is not really needed.
I removed the barrel chair and built a storage cabinet in its place.
Features include slot for rug. Space for shoes, boots. Racks for 4 plastic tubs for backpacking supplies.
Bolts to the floor using existing bolt holes from barrel chair.

Cool idea! How do you like your 23U? I’ve got one on order.

I really like the 23u. I think I would have preferred a 22E but I could not find one with the same dinette and on a E450 chassis. I bought this one very gently used. It was a rental for about 9 months (not Cruise America). They fixed most of the initial problems. It looked new when I got it at 9,000 miles. I have fixed a few things. Enhanced a few things. Added on a few things. Doubled the miles in the 9 months that I have owned it.
Would I go back and do the same thing again? YES.

Thanks for the feedback! We've awaiting a 23U that we ordered factory built and are hoping to take delivery on in the next month or two.

We're a family of 4 so the barrel chair on the 23U was a nice option to offer a bit of extra seating flexibility/separation while on the road. Nice to see that it's easy to modify as you did though.

23u barrel chair

Great idea JKromberg,

I have a 2016 23u which I like but the barrel chair drives me crazy. There's no room to turn it. The right armrest is uncomfortable because it's too darn close to the front passenger seat and as you indicated it also prevents the front passenger seat from reclining.

I occasionally search for a replacement for the barrel chair but no luck so far. I wanted to find a good functional replacement chair that I could actual turn but it's getting old so unless some miracle happens between now and completion of my solar upgrade project I might just follow your lead. I like it. Well done.

Thanks for sharing.
John

It would be cool to replace with this chair: (Thomas Payne RV Euro Recliner Chair) but I'm not sure it would fit and you'd loose the 5th seatbelted spot in the 23u.

Thanks mmthor,

That’s what I originally had in mind but could never find. I’ll have to check into it to see if it would fit. If not than thanks to this thread I still have good alternative options to ponder.

Cheers
John

Extra storage, greatest idea ever. We had a Freedom Elite same floor plan, bought used that had the chair taken out and replaced with drawers. Sold it after relocating to AZ. Fast forward 3 yrs.... Just bought a Chateau 23 U. 1st change we're making is loosing the chair. I wasn't sure how the drawers had been attached, now I know :-) Thanks!
