2020 Magnitude / Omni Propane - Jacks Power Unit Compartment Upgrade

One of my pet peeves with the early Magnitude / Omni's is the Propane Tank and Leveler Hydraulic Power Unit compartment is open and the tank and power unit are exposed to water, dirt, road debris, etc. My old Outlaw 29H was the same way and the hydraulic power unit looked horrible after a year of being exposed to the road and elements.

I really started fuming when I saw online pictures of a 2022 model that now has the Propane Tank and Leveler Hydraulic Power Unit enclosed... just as it should have been from the beginning.

I thought about taking the coach to a welding / fabrication shop to have them make something out of steel and weld it in place to the existing structure. Then I decided that it might be a hassle welding around the propane tank. So then the wheels started turning on what else I could do myself.

The bottom of the compartment was the only thing really exposed. There already was a back metal wall and metal side walls (there were two openings in the front side wall but I thought I could make someting work). The compartment bottom opening was ~ 22" x 42" and the side walls had about a 1" lip that would allow me to drill holes and use screws to mount the floor I wanted to create for the compartment.

After looking online and striking out finding something that I could buy and put in place the wheels started turning....... and off to Lowes and Home Depot I went.

I purchased a 24" x 48" x 1/32" piece of aluminum sheet ($53 ). Steel would have been a little cheaper but then I would need to worry about prepping it and painting it so it didn't rust like crazy so I figured the extra cost of the aluminum was worth the hassle.

I also purchased three pieces of aluminum angle that were 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 48" along with some stainless steel screws, nylok nuts and washers.

I was going to cut the aluminum for an exact fit but then I decided to use the entire piece as-is to create a forward splash gurad that would make the openings in the front wall of the comparment irrelevant.

It is not 100% sealed from the elements but it should keep 98% of the water, dirt, debris, road salt, etc. off the Propane Tank and Hydraulic Power Unit.

Here are pics of the final product in case anyone with an early Magitude or Omni (or really any other coach) who may want to do something similar to protect their propane tank and hydraulic power unit.....

The open propane compartment runs across the industry. I often wondered if it was a regulated issue for venting in the event of a leak.

It looks really great; but I wonder if the open bottom might be for "blast attenuation"?

The open bottom is for safety. If their is a leak it, propane vapors are heavier than air and will sink. If there is no outlet it will lay in the lower areas of the compartment and is an explosion risk. Turn the propane on a gas grill with the lid closed and light it after it has been on for a bit. It can be an impressive boom.

Do you think a fine mesh screen would be enough to keep out the crud: yet still let vapors escape?

I have seen higher end Super C's with the Propane Tank and Hydraulic Power Unit enclosed.

What you have to remeber is you can't completely seal the compartment. They have to be open at the top for the propane line and hydraulic lines to exit.

I already thought about the safety issue and there is more than enough open space at the top and on the front and back wall to allow air to circulate and gas to esacape should there be a need.

I also consider the bottom of the propane tank being exposed a safety hazard. You run over a piece of steel in the road or chunck of broken concrete from a bad road and it shoots into the bottom of the propane tank you have big issues. Putting a plate on the bottom will protect it from potential damage.
