Post 3D Printed Parts and Accessories

Anybody use 3D printed parts in their RV?

I got an OpenSource 3D printer and have been printing various things for use around the house and garage. One thing I designed in cad and printed for the RV was a better sunscreen for the radio. It took a few cad design learning attempts to get things "right".

Seems there might be many RV related print opportunities ... Latches, hooks, handles, holders, stands, adaptors, protectors, trays, dividers, etc...

Anyway, if you have 3D print ideas, thoughts, questions, I thought I'd create a thread where we could discuss and share.

What printer do you have or planning to get? Mine is a LulzBot TAZ6.
What were the reasons for printer choice? OpenSource, large print surface, automatic leveling, expandability, low operating cost and reliability.

As you start printing more things for your Axis, my need for a 3D printer is going to increase dramatically! 😁

That is very cool... you could totally start up a little side business producing mods. I would love to get a sunscreen like that for my POS Axxera radio. When I have the back-up camera on I can hardly see the picture feed when the sun is out, the bathroom light is on, or my daughter has her iPad on in the back of the coach. This is my way of saying I hate the Axxera system.

Seriously, very cool what you are doing there!

I'm just starting to do my own prints and cad drawings ... so there's a learning curve. If I had a printer a couple years ago when I got the Axis, there would have been many things printed instead of buying less than an exact fit.

My first simple drawing I printed was a cupholder divider for my vehicles to replace the makeshift ones I've been using for a few years. The new ones don't fall apart when removed and they fit snug.

Other parts I've found cad drawing on thingiverse for some parts I've printed. Some of those didn't tickle my fancy so I ended up making my own cad drawings.

My radio shroud is 199.5mm wide inside to be a perfect fit for the radio in my Axis. When I first got the Axis, the screen was hard to see the backup camera display when in bright sun. So, back then I bent a piece of smoked plexiglass and trimmed it to fit. That was supposed to be temporary until I made a better one out of carbon fiber ... I stopped playing with carbon fiber because it just took too much effort.

If there's something somebody wants printed, I'd certainly entertain helping a fellow RV'r out.

Ty,

That Monitor Shield looks like something I need. I'd be glad to pay time and materials for one. It might help me make it to my Birthday before I get a 3D printer.

Doc, that sounds a bit like me ... the printer was my slightly early birthday toy this year. I've been slightly involved with a couple 3D printed projects and the then results from home prints were part of what held me back from getting my own. Several friends and acquaintances have printers (mostly home built), so I've been able to observe their print results for a few years. Nice usable prints some were finally getting got me tossing serious thoughts back and forth about getting one for about the last year.

I printed a magnetic knife holder. Works great - knifes even stay put on the road. Used strong round magnets from home depot.

A magnetized knife rack is a great idea for RVs. Did you print a wall mounted rack?

My garage refrigerator holds some magnets ready for use in projects! Mostly from K&J Magnetics or https://supermagnetman.com ... probably a 100 or so disk drive magnets strung about my place because I use them for so many things. My RV access panel screws were replaced with magnets and it sure speeds up getting into those spaces when needed.

RV'ing today in Ga at CrossingCreek RV Resort. Wind is howling, RV is rocking in the wind, so online and reading about these 3D printers. Pretty sure it is going to be my birthday present this year. Ty, getting home on Sunday, should have the radio screen visor in the box.

Nice eagle!
When I lived in GA we didn't have front plates. So Michigan is that way too?

I use Autocad and Makerbot and Divinci xyz 3d printer. I had my students design and print open filigree boxes that can be attached to the inside of the cabinets with Velcro. Now my makeup and toothbrushes stay in place on bumpy roads.

The xyz printer is under $300 and works better than the $2,500 makerbot.

Getting students to design solutions ... some great things could result from that!

I've tried a few free cad packages that are ok. I am currently using Fusion 360 while it stays free and it's the best one I've used so far. However I'm having some thoughts about trying Onshape next.

Over 3 spools through the printer now without issue though only time will tell about reliability. I'm currently printing 10 various phone docks and stands to try. A large print surface is nice for loading up various things and let them print for a day or two.

Ty,

You teach 3-D printing? I thought I'd look at some of the local Community Colleges to see if any courses are offered; before plunking down my money for a printer.

The visor arrived and looks great and with a road trip to Smoky Mountain Meadows Campground in Bryson City NC this Thursday evening it will be a test drive. While in the Mountains I may take a 1/2 day Fly Fishing Class/trip...never Fly fished before either.

I taught architectural drafting and design. I retired I Jan. So we could RV more. Www.TinkerCad.com is real easy to use. You can get a xyz printer for $289 and experiment with it. I bought one for my art studio and print out small projects.
