Another spare tire mount question

I tried searching but didn't find the answer. I am looking at adding a spare tire to my Class C RV since it did not come with one. I saw where many people recommended the Roadmaster hitch carrier but it is quite pricey. I was wondering why I haven't seen anyone with bumper mounted ones like you find on travel trailers. My RV has the 4inch steel square bumper which is mounter to the frame. I have found some tire mounts that accommodate 8 lug tires. Is there any reason this wouldn't work on Class C? Below is a link to a tire carrier on eTrailer. I tried posting a picture of my bumper but it doesn't seem to be working.

I negotiated a spare tire and mount with the dealer when I purchased my class c. The mount you show is the same one they installed. No problems after 32K miles of travel.

I bought a Curt 31006 hitch mounted tire carrier, a tire cover , hitch stabilizer and lighted license plate holder on Amazon and total cost was $250. I also had the license plate relocated to the right of the tire and wired into the existing wiring. (A police officer friend told me I could be fined $100 for obstructing the plate). You will need to buy bolts to attach the tire and rim to the carrier. I actually had to use the spare as one of the valves on the inner tire failed.

I bought a hitch mount spare tire carrier and am using the trailer hitch. I also had to relocate the rear license plate. I bought an led rear license plate holder and wiring set up that plugs directly into the rear hitch plug. I attached the rear license plate to my rear ladder and the set up works great. I think it was less than $250.00.

If you have the 4" square tube bumper, you should be able to go to any RV dealer like Tweetys.com and buy an inexpensive tire mounting kit. My Thor Axis 24.1 doesn't have that bumper and I was forced to fabricate a hitch mounted extension that has a tire carrier on it. It folds down and is all bolted, no welds. I took 2" square tubing and 2-5/16 square tube to make the extension, but you can buy them too. Then took flat plate to fasten an upright tube to the extension and another plate mounted to that to fasten the rim to. A competent welder/fabricator could make one for you.

I have a 2019 Freedom Elite with the 4 inch bumper. I installed a bolt on spare tire carrier. Works fine.

Spare Tire Carrier

This is my solution to the spare tire carrier.
It allows us to tow the Jeep and a bike carrier.
I have them powder coated locally with any color you like.
With the tie down points, This thing is rock solid with no rattle.
We do a 1800mi trip before this lock down ad it works perfect.
Ive built and sold several here locally and the folks love them.
The one in the pictures is ready to send to the powder coater.
Enjoy the pics and open to any improvement observations welcome.

When I had my 2017 Freedom Elite and wanted to carry a spare I contacted Thor to see what my options were. I knew that there was a factory option for a rear wall mounted carrier and specifically wanted to know if the wall structure was there for me to bolt on to. They said that it was not. So I asked about doing the very thing you suggest and I was told - very emphatically - not to do that because the bumper was not designed to support the added weight and eventually would fail. They said the only approved methods for carrying a spare are in one of the compartments or with a hitch mounted device. I believe them. Please check your welds often. Personally I’d hate to have the bumper and spare fail and fall into interstate traffic!

I also looked at the carriers made for a trailer. They aren't too expensive.
I may try to fabricate one using t-bar aluminum mounted between the bumper and body. It would use u-bolts to attach to the bumper

My C came factory with mounting tabs under for a rack.
I've forgotten how much the rack cost through the dealer
Basically two tabs welded to the frame, one each side, with holes for screws.
then rearward close to the hitch on centerline is an attach point which was basically a threaded rod sticking straight down.
the rack is a triangle of tubular steel, two points mount to the tabs as pivot points, then the third point lands on the threaded rod secured with a nut.
I double nutted it and added a safety chain
but it works very well. Holds tire mounted on wheel out of the way perfectly.
The only negative really is the added weight towards the rear, but that would even be worse with a bumper mount.

I posted on this previously but here's a picture. I bolted it with hardened grade 8 bolts rather than welds. Anyone who can measure, cut steel accurately, drill 1/2" holes accurately can make this. Total with the steel was about$100.Click image for larger version

Additional hitch and spare tire mount.
I started with this curt universal hitch.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I flipped the Curt hitch sides so that the flange was on the bottom.
I then cut the hitch to the width of the inter frame rail approximately 33-1/2 “
Took the cut off pieces from each side and made them the other two receivers.
See attached drawing for dims ... Make sure you drill the 5/8” hitch holes before you weld the two cut offs.
You will need to allow space so that the side pieces slide in to fit between the truck frame when you install it.

I bolted the sides to the bumper holes total of 4 grade 5 bolts on each side.
I also re-drilled the bottom holes in the new hitch to match the existing. Replaced all the hitch bolts with 1/2” longer grade 8 bolts.

I cut the bumper hole with a jigsaw with a metal blade. It took a little time but was a clean cut.

Hope this helps let me know if you need anything else.
