Adding Another Muffler

Has anyone in here ever added an additional muffler to their generator's exhaust system?
(It doesn't even need to be a permanent bolt-on: just something that can be added at the campsite.)

I added a resonator from Onan....basically a straight through glass pack muffler.
It tuned the sound but didn't really quiet it.

After I had bought the resonator, I came across a tractor muffler at Tractor Supply, about the same size but not a flow through. I think it would probably be better, and I don't think it would cause too much back pressure.

I also have a genturi. It might help with the sound level a bit, but it's not a huge affect....but it does offer other obvious advantages and I think it's well worth it...

Seems a lot of generator noise is the engines mechanical motions more than the exhaust.

When I was heavily into ATVing: I remembered that there were companies offering secondary mufflers, to quiet the bikes down a bit...
With what I've seen about generators: it just seemed like a natural application for this kind of thing, and I wondered if there were already options out there...
Thanks!

I know this thread is a few weeks old but I am interested in putting a motorcycle exhaust pipe in line with my Onan 5500generator and extention the pipes up to the roof line for Co safety. Any thoughts?

Adding a muffler that adds back pressure to the engine changes the air gas flow and will ruin the generator.

Consider sound baffling material rated for heat. That will make a difference.
I used this material for the dog house. www.dynamat.com

You could put it on some surfaces of the generator or on the compartment walls. Just do not block airflow.

That is what the Gen-Turi (Camco page on Gen-Turi) does.

Groundpounder, thanks. While dry camping in the high desert I could hear the exhaust sound a half mile away! A call to Onan is likely to result in a typical don't do it response as it will void the warranty blah, blah blah. This begs the question " how much damage and how long will it take"?. I am thinking of removing the built in muffler not just adding another in line. Any thoughts?

Jamiegeek, I also looked at this and I would like a permanent solution.

I highly doubt the generator will even notice an inline muffler added to the exhaust. It’s not like the generator has a high-rpm/airflow or highly-tuned engine. I was thinking of adding one to mine, as well as adding a Gen-turi.

yeah, as I mentioned I looked at a tractor muffler thinking it would have done better than my resonator. I recon as long as the muffler is intended for an engine at least as big it's not going to cause any significant increase in back pressure. Use common sense I think.... but of course the canned answer from onan would be don't.

I'll add this....if my generator was mounted in the rear, someplace where something like this would make sense....In a heartbeat I would do a permanently installed "genturi"....complete with secondary inline muffler before it, similar to the resonator install I did.

The only reason I wouldn't be too interested in just routing the tailpipe up there would be that it would get hot....

A muffler will only help so much, the more it helps the more it will affect the performance of the engine.

Consider where the sound is coming from ie muffler, engine, cabinet. You may also have vibrations traveling through the mount.

Sound may also be entering the coach from below as small openings for power water, tanks, heaters etc all can leak in sound. Consider plugging all holes you can find.

A Genturi is your best solution to redirect the sound from your exhaust. The majority of the noise, as others have said, is mechanical. Adding any type of additional muffler will not have much effect and if it creates any back pressure you risk damaging your generator. Over the years I’ve seen lots of attempts to quiet generators, I have yet to see one that was particularly successful.

Newell started doing this years ago. Many Newell owners are NASCAR drivers and owners, at events exhaust is required to be vented up, rather than using a Genturi Newell elected to do it at the factory. Many high end coaches vent exhaust up, it’s something owners are willing to pay for.
