Adding extra USB charging ports

In another thread someone asked about adding these and someone else supplied a link. That got me thinking: If I add some to our unit in the slide we can run without the genny running (since our son usually asks for it to be on to charge his devices while we're travelling).

Here we go:

I picked up 3 of these guys: XYZ Boat Supplies Dual USB Charger
They aren't very deep and come with the hardware to hook them up (two screws and the compression wiring thingys (technical term) to go onto the tabs).
When I removed the light over the couch, however...

I discovered that it isn't deep enough there to install the USB charger with its associated tabs. So I soldered the wires directly to the tabs (saving me about 3/4").
Next up was to drill the holes and pull the wires through...well! LOL Turns out there is a rib in there about 1/2 between the light and either outlet. That was a bear to get the wire around. Had to use my inspection camera to find the other hole and tape the wire to it as I pulled it out.
Now I have the holes drilled and the wires pulled through, the next issue is the fascia there is really thin; I needed something to screw into (both the outlets and the light have 3/4" MDF behind them for the screws to bite into).
I stopped by my local home improvement store and picked up some 3/4" square dowel rod and chopped it up into little ~3/4" lengths.

Put a little glue on them and slide them into place on either side of the hole.

This is where the project sits now...waiting for the glue to dry.

Update:
After letting the glue dry for 6 hours I finished the wiring and screwed in the USB chargers.

Overall a pretty simple project except for pulling the wire through from the lamp. Even that I really wouldn't call challenging as far as skills, just challenging to get around the obstacles.

The 3/4" square dowels worked like a champ: Those are screwed up there pretty tight.

I changed some of the AC outlets to these type with the USB "built in" for all of the gadgets that require charging:

Both sides of the bed and one near the love seat were swapped out, and with our 4 12V batteries and 400 watts of solar, we can charge away even when boondocking.

I had originally picked up some like that but couldn't install them for 2 reasons:
  • The outlet was too deep and couldn't physically fit into the space where I was going to put them
  • With no solar, or inverter the intent was to put something in that charged without requiring the generator (you, obviously, don't have that issue with 4 batteries and solar)

I went this way for when on shore power or having the generator running

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and this way with the standard 12 V chargers
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

One of these is in the bedroom to power my C-Pap unit when on battery, and one is near the table to either be used for charging devices, or, with a small inverter, to power my laptop.
