Adding Steering Wheel Controls to an Axxera AVM70LH Radio

Most vehicles today have steering wheel controls for the radio and cell phone for hands free operation. Ford's bodybuilders option for the Motorhomes is a steering wheel with the SYNC capability. Instead, I added a very inexpensive
"ALLOMN Universal Steering Wheel Wireless Remote Controller." These are available on Amazon for $38 Canadian or $30 American, with free Delivery.

The instructions came in Chinglish, thus the challenge for the install. Along with the controls is a receiver box which you attach to the radio wires. I attached the power red wire to the constant power for the radio, while the black to the ground. The white and grey wires to the labelled SWC1 and 2 brown and brown/black wires out of the Axxera.

This is where the fun began. Going to the settings for the radio, it would not recognize any of the signals. With a multimeter in hand everything checked out. The Axxera schematics showed a SWC black ground, which I could not really pinpoint so, I assumed Thor had grounded it in the harness. In the process of looking for the ground I had pulled the fuse out of the back of the radio. Upon re-inserting the fuse discovered within the settings for the SWC in the Axxera, it was now looking for a key. The Chinglish instructions from my interpretation said to input up to 5 keys, then power off both the receiver and radio. Powering off did nothing. Pulling the fuse would allow me to enter one of the keys. If I hit “enter” in the Axxera settings I could not add any additional keys. Further playing I discovered, that if I pulled the fuse for the radio, then going into the settings, I could enter all eight keys and voila.

So for the price of not even one case of beer here in Canada, or about a case and half of beer in the US you can add one of these.

Thats awesome. This is yet another feature that I wish my RV had from factory. I will have to look into this.

So what all can you control?

Radio Volume
Radio Station (or CD track)
Answer and hangup cell phone.

What else?

Mode and Mute. Although on the Axxera, the "mode" includes items like "Aux IN', "AV IN' but does not include the "Rear Camera". It does include the SD Card though where I have all my music stored on. There is no CD on this model of radio.

eventually i want to try this but swap out the steering wheel for a more modern one. (like F450 not E450) that way i still get the additional controls but it's OEM quality and they'd be back-lit too.
