Okay, point duly noted on "Baby Tiffin"; so maybe only one payment and a half
I think I can speak for the rest of us in saying if you can send a reduced payment of $150 each... "errhh that would be just great".

Here is my simple way of viewing.
1. Flooded batteries, they are cheapest possible and they come with most RVs
2. AGM is an upgrade over Flooded, because they have more AHs, more reserve power, no water to add maintenance free
3. Lithium, the ultimate if you plan to boondock; or need long extended period of battery life and money not a factor.
In my case, I want the AGM because...
#1. I am very cheap (the AGMs I see are about $40 more than the Flooded) I see some AGMs are $250/$300, but I promise you, I will NEVER pay that much for AGM
#2. I don't want to have battery maintenance on my RV Checklist of things to do. That is why I bought the AGS; so I don't even have to check voltage.
#3. The Flowrite system may cost more than the differential for Flood / AGM cost, so that is not an option for me. Maybe when I first bought the RV, I should have bought the Flowrite then
#4. Getting to Group 31, increased AH, and more reserve without Lithium is my #1 priority; when time comes to replace my existing Flood House batteries.
Question:
Someone mentioned a new battery they bought that they did NOT like? Short of going dead or not being able to hold a charge (which are defects) what can a battery do or not do; to not be satisfied with? I don't think I have ever bought a new battery that do what it was suppose to do or did not work? I could see where I may change my mind or see something else I like or want, but don't see what factors make a battery underperform to expectations?
|
I must have referenced the wrong member talking about the Flow-Rite system. It's easy to not be satisified with the AGM'S I got. I could see NO appreciable improvement in performance. It gave me no more time till discharge below 12v and there is 1 ah difference between the AGM I got and the Deep Cycle RV batt I went back to. You mentioned you have the group 31 I think. Mine are 27's. Will a 31 fit and is THAT what I should have got? I want to use AGM's but only if they work better. Got better things to do with hard earned money!!! Thanks for any suggestions; Bob Trice

As far as swapping up to 31s: you'll need to measure your battery box, and see if they can handle that little bit of extra battery length.
Mine can, and I will be moving up to size 31 AGMs...

No it the 31s that I will buy when the time comes. (Note: I must admit my Floods are working perfectly fine right now
For my RV house batteries; I have two of the below from NAPA
Grp 24; Deep Cycle Lead Acid 8240 (550 CA; 120min reserve; 65AH @20 hrs
This summer when I have nothing to do, I may follow Pete's advice, turn off my AGS and charger and allow the batteries to start discharging on their own and save a little energy while they die.
I will be looking to buy new batteries next year (Year 3 for my new RV)
Grp 31; AGM; 650 Cranking Amps; 190 Reserve; 105AH @20 hours
I have plenty of room in my battery compartment; in fact plenty to spill water trying to ensure they are topped off properly IMO, topping off water in a flooded battery without spilling water that carries corroded crud to my concrete is like trying to change oil without spilling a drop. I simply don't wish to try any more. I can go years without ever needing to put water in my car batteries, or chassis battery for that matter.

I don't think group 31s will fit easily with wiggling (13"x6.85"). Group 27s are 12.65"x6.85" Even through the battery compartment is wide enough the door is not. If you load the battery into the compartmental the long way first. there is not enough room to turn it. I did get my group 29s (13"x6.72} in; but it was a really tight fit and there was only one place in the battery compartment where I could bulge the sheet metal sides wide enough to turn the batteries. Make sure the batteries are fully charged before truing to put them in. All LA batteries swell when discharged.
Older Thor MC coaches of less then 32 ft have a two battery compartment. The longer coaches and new designs have room for four batteries

If I had to buy today
https://www.batteriesplus.com/produc.../sli31dtmagmdc
2 @ $244 each less 10% Batteries Plus Discount : $488 - $49 = $439
Less Bob's gratuitous rebate of $150 : $439 - $150 = $289 for two new House Batteries.
This AGM battery exceeds my minimum requirements I stated above. I use the Duracell Ultras in my Harley and I love it, nothing takes a beating like a Motorcycle battery (well maybe short of Golf Cart?)
The key is when do you buy? When I buy, it will before my existing go out, but not too soon. I am very cheap; but I don't mince on quality and believe in preventative maintenance. I won't take sides on the Flood / AGM arguments, but checking the water for house batteries is not what I want to do I don't mind checking if need be for the chassis battery, but I know I will not need to worry about the Chassis battery. They are a dime a dozen anyway.
I can tell you why I think this way. After owning boats for years my #1 issue was dead batteries. I have nice AGS that keep my batteries safely charged no matter where we go. My batteries have never been below 12.2vdc. I would like to increase the reserve capacity to run twice as long with no generator required (& no solar required note: I don't have solar anyway); and to ensure that low water is never a factor on why my batteries may fail. And of course the biggest reason of all, my wife has told me I have got to stop staining our driveway / concrete with spillage from the batteries

I've got Duracell FLA 27s, and I like your choice of battery.
I was also planning on getting Duracell size 31 AGMs.

Our coach batteries died at 4yo in August 2019. Replaced with two of these - and couldn't be happier with results. As (many) others have mentioned, they are pricier than flooded - but from my admittedly unscientific observations charge faster, discharge slower, and let me ignore "that battery bay" in the basement longer. "Not adding water" is a bonus. https://www.batteriesplus.com/produc.../sli31dtmagmdc

If so, can you simplify this solution for the layman to follow
To replace 2 normal 12vdc batteries, would you need 4 packs of 4 which is 16 total sections? I am trying to get the footprint required for replacement?
I see the 280AH so that really good compared to what I have seen on AGM but it does not show the Reserve Capacity?
I also like that you could buy with a core? If so; I could buy and sit on until my existing batteries went bad.

You need for pieces or ever how many you want. They are 3.2 volts each Four equals 12 volts.

What about this EverStart Marine Deep Cycle option?
It is flood but it says "Battery is maintenance free under normal operating conditions" Not sure what that means, but if I don't need to add water, count me in
Also, it has 126AH, that is 21 AH more than the the $244 / Duracell I could go from 130 AH today to 252 AH with two of these batteries.
It is group size 29, but I believe about the same size as the Duracell Group 31.
Cost only $87
Plus Wal Mart will install it for free. I think, maybe not for an RV?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart...5-MCA/20531543
This has my attention, I could basically double my existing boondocking capabilities for about $200

Assembled Product Dimensions (L x W x H)
13.00 x 6.80 x 10.00 Inches
Also, in specifications I saw 122AH (not the 126AH); additionally in one picture on the website it said 115AH? Not sure which is correct or direct comparison with Duracell's 105AH, but either way, it is more than Duracell's.
Really need to learn what this means.... "Battery is maintenance free under normal operating conditions" ?
