Axis/Vegas table straps

(Instead of just adding this to a lengthy thread where people can't find it I figured I'd just start a new Thread)
A simple way to add straps to your Axis/Vegas tables to make it much easier to lift up from behind the couch.
Parts list:
Code:
#8 X 5/8" Wood Screws
Fender Washer 1/8" X 1"
Strap material (I used a 15'X1" Rachet tie down and cut off the end)
Drill bit slightly smaller than the wood screws
Tools: Drill, screw driver, awl, lighter/grill lighter
Start out by cutting the straps to length (about 18" or so). You'll need 3 of them (1 for the small table and 2 for the large table). Use the lighter to melt the cut ends of the straps so that they don't fray in the future.
Measure about 1/2" or so from the end of the drill bit and wrap some tape around it (this is your depth gauge):

Drill two holes opposite each floor mount on the bottom side of the table where you want the straps (see final image below for positioning).
Hold the strap over the holes and use the awl to punch a hole through the strap.
Push the screws through the washers and the strap.
Put a small "dollop" (yeah technical term) of wood glue over the holes (I always use glue in any camper project).
Screw the screws into the holes. Done. Now if you measured your drill bit correctly you won't have any bumps or protrusions on the opposite side of the table (I thought I did, but it was just dirt! LOL).

Great idea and nice job. The tables have some weight to them and take some effort to pull them out. I may give this a try. I had just about decided to take them out completely and store a couple of TV tray's behind the sofa.

Thanks

I can't take credit for the idea. User davidgebo described them in this thread:

Jamie, are you concerned about the ability of the screws to hold the staps firmly over a period of time to the table. I have know idea what the tables are made out of.

I think the tables are just OSB (e.g. particle board); at least that is what it looked like when I drilled out the holes. There is that possibility that they may pull out over time (One of the reasons I also used glue--hopefully the glue gives it a bit more grab. If you really want it to be stuck you could use a dab of epoxy instead of just wood glue I suppose).
As they are the straps easily support the weight of the tables (when using both straps on the larger table). I think they should last if used carefully...

Thanks Jamie, I saw this article over on the Roadtreking blog.

This looks like another good option and seem easy enough.

I used to superglue the screw holes in particle board (drill hole, insert/remove screw, superglue, re-install the screw). That would make the threads in the wood more "solid".

These days, I would use epoxy as well, or those metal inserts that have threads in them that screw into the wood (and I would glue those in with epoxy).

I would also have a tendency to not fold the straps over onto themselves, but to secure each strap end to the table independently. That way, you would have 4 screws holding each strap rather than two.

Otherwise, it is a nice job...

Wow! It hadn't crossed my mind to fasten each strap end individually; that would make it 2x stronger. I may have to do that before I put them back in the camper (since I'm stuck here inside while snowmageddon passes over us).

There is not anything wrong the way you did it, but I always like to think of alternatives.

Yea, we're getting dumped on today (with snow) in Southwest Lower Michigan as well.

We had thought about going to the Ft. Wayne RV show this weekend, but not with this weather.

Perhaps we will go to the Novi RV show next weekend. Dunno, because the Grand Rapids Auto Show is next weekend as well. Not nearly as large as the Cobo Hall show, but still a nice show (and a whole lot closer to where I live).

Can't wait for spring...

Update: Thanks to suggestions above I remounted the straps with screws for each end of the strap:

I put the tables back in the camper today: What a difference the straps make. Its now really easy to both get them out and put them away.
