Best internet provider when no cell service or wifi?

Looking for recommendations for Internet service providers when no cell service or wifi is available - satellite service - needs to be 'on demand' billing model not a monthly contract.

Anybody found this to be available ?

Starlink may be available to do this by the end of the year. Otherwise, no.

there is nothing 'satellite' for mobile internet...the antenna has to be fixed. and, of course, there is no 'monthly' at-will contract, you'll for sure be exposed to a long-term contract, even so. The equipment will also be VERY expensive.

otherwise, like the rest of us, you'll probably need both an ATT and Verizon device, and use 'wifi' when available... even though 'wifi' is no longer the 'speed' and 'data rich' that you probably will need, and you'll need to stay within the parameters of a cell signal for at least one of those providers.

There's HughesNet for RV:
https://ispsat.com/

HughesNet has extremely high latency though. I'd just wait for Starlink.

Thanks for the feedback

Just checking to see if I missed something - just not enough demand yet for providers to offer an economical solution - it's just a bummer to have to drive somewhere to send SMS and check email when parked 'off the grid'.

As someone mentioned above, Starlink may be available by the end of this year. Equipment cost is currently $499, with a monthly service fee of $99. I'm not aware of any requirement for a long term contract.

There WAS demand for satellite Internet: cell internet killed that demand and the other problems with satellite Internet has made it dinosaur technology.

Starlink, although satellite based, works completely differently and is the new kid on the block. Demand is there for it, but the infrastructure has a ways to go. It's in the build-out/Beta testing stage right now.

Where are you going where you don't have enough signal?

Using external antennas will pull cells signals way better than any handheld phone or Hotspot junk.

Check mobile must have. Com for peplink mobile router kits with external wifi antennas. Amazing performance. I have a dual sim router setup on my RV.

I'd hold out for Starlink. Most likely no more than six months before it's available to the general public. By that time they should also be allowing people to take their dish on the road.

Why not just throw another log on the fire...

...and enjoy the silence?

Amen to that! We check our mail or whatever when we’re “in town” but happily disconnect from the world when we camp. Sometimes download movies or shows for binge watching on rainy days.

Don't be discouraged for what you want to do. You could always rent out Marine One on a pay as you go basis until Starlink is available

For me personally, (and I am cheap) I invested in a Netgear Extender and a Wifi Camp Pro when trying to reach a nearby, but distant WIFI signal that I have access to. It may only reach the distant signal and be effective 50% of the time, but when it does it is absolutely great. But if you think about how it was intended to be use, it will boost a local wifi signal making it effectively stronger than what you can get off a mere phone, laptop or TV. We stream YouTube TV all the time as if we were home. Oddly, we don't use the laptops or phones that much short of planning where we may wish to go next.

Now that is wisdom!

Unfortunately, in my case I have too few vacation days to go on a long trip and the children are still in school. Our options are:
  1. Stay home (and use our 3 Mbps DSL...)
  2. Camp only at developed campgrounds
  3. Stay in areas that have mobile coverage
  4. Forget about work and school
  5. Find a way to connect to the innerwebs so we can road- school and I can work from (motor)home

Of those, the last option sounds the most appealing.

We're gonna do a lot of "backyard boon-docking" this Summer...
(Health issues...)
That gives us the chance to piggyback off our Office Internet... and maybe even grab some 5G from our house.

We have our Netgear Nighthawk X4 AC2200 WiFi EX7300 Extender in the RV hooked up 24/7 at home. It connects to our home router and boost the signal. We have better speeds with devices in the RV than some places in the house. It provides for 2.4 and 5g

But OP wants something where Wifi is NOT available; which means it must be Satellite. That is a very nice luxury and will cost money that I don't have to spend. If I go that far out, it must be for a reason and if it just for vacation, I with you throw another log, if it is for work my employer will pay for my satellite, the latter is also true if I wish to combine work with leisure.

That sounds like 2 incompatible concepts...
But if it works for you:

Does anyone use sat phones? They're pricey but provide emergency coverage.

If you're going that route: you might as well have StarLink thrown onto the pile,as well...
