Boondocking upgrade suggestions - Hurricane W. 31s

Hurricane Windsport 31s, just replaced my 2 house batteries with group 31 (120 amp hour) rated. Inverter is an Xantrex XM 1000, no power being converted to run AC 110 appliances.

Considering upgrading my inverter/converter to allow for some 110 power devices without shore or generator power.

Longer term hope to upgrade with solar to help with recharging and maybe switch to Lithium.

Anyone been through this already that can share some lessons learned?

thank you all.
Chris

Hey Chris

I have hurricane and have 4 house agm's batteries, I just swapped out our 2 year old's for 4 new ones.

I also have 200 watts of solar. have pre ran setup just added panels.

Just boondoggled in outerbanks for 10 days in Ocracoke NC and did really good! Weather was perfect

4 batteries and 200 watts solar ran everything!

had couple tenters that used our power to make their smoothies in the mornings! ha

ran generators little bit to top off and run ac's on couple days.

Did so good!

Boss lady said go for it on the solar/battery upgrade so our cats are good to go where ever we go! Heck yeah!

I have 1200 amp hours of lithium
1.6k of solar panels
2 ac slow start caps already here.

Waiting on Victron brains and parts, getting the new 50amp one.

going be a job! but going be self sufficient!!

Kitty Kitty!!

Why won't your Xantrex 1000 W inverter power your AC appliances? 1000 W is usually enough for the microwave and a TV. What appliances do you want to power from an inverter?

First...to be properly wired, one would need to run their microwave/convection line thru the inverter (along with their TV/outlet line).

That said, the standard Thor High Pointe Microwave is 900-1000 watts. So it would work
But with the newer Thor models, a High Pointe Micro/Convection is standard fare.
And the Convection is closer to 1500 watts due to heating element.

Most 1000 watt inverters with auto transfer switches would not allow for using the 1500 watts consistently.

Bottomline, my opinion is that you’d need to upgrade to a 2000 running watts/4000 surge watts inverter.
But even then, since Micro/Convec would be on same circuits as TV/standard outlets...one would need to be careful not to overload

So if you wanted to run your microwave and one a/c unit (in addition to some of the "normal" stuff): what size inverter would you suggest?

I upgraded to a Xantrex Freedom Xi 2000. It is a true sign wave and has a 30 amp pass through. I mounted its sub-panel on the bed side on the bed side. You will need to upgrade the 100 amp circuit beaker to 250 amps and run a parallel 4 awg cable to the inverter under the bed. I went to as single 2/0 ground.

My inverter is 1500w in and 950 out. That's completely inefficient but is what it is.

where did you find the room for 1200amps? What batteries and how many did you use to achieve those AHs? 1200AH @ 12v = 14.4kw

You should see the amount of outside storage capacity that he has to work with...

What I thought. I went online to see what one looked like. Oddly enough, the interior is an exact dup of my Chateau, right down to the counter and kitchen draws and pantry. The 31S, however, has it all over the Chateau when it comes to outside storage.

I use a Honda 2000 inverter generator a couple hours a day to keep batteries up during short-term boondocking. Everything works too good for me to start changing batteries and systems around.

Glad you asked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have a 2018 Thor Windsport 29m. We love it but after converting the Norcold 611 fridge to a 12v system by J.C. Refrigeration in Indiana I was using more 12v power. I tried AGM's and was very disappointed. Napa took them back and I went back to flooded RV/Marine group 27 batts that were half the price of AGM's. I would still not be able to go an entire night without my readout dropping below 12v's with the agm pos batteries. I measured the room in the battery tray and saw I could remove the small metal plate in front of the battery and remove the access and the other fixture on the bottom of the tray. Can't set a battery on these or it will damage the bottom!! The 3rd battery slipped right into the tray and I used a 1 x 2" board to make it a tight fit. Connected the terminals and now have plenty of amp hours for every night. I have a solar portable charger, 135 watts, more like a trickle charger and that helps if I don't drive somewhere the next day which is what we usually do. Good Luck figuring it out! Signed; NO FAN OF AGM'S; Bob Trice
