Bug Screen over Furnace Exhaust
Hi all. I put a bug screen over my furnace vents and exhaust. I thought I heard at one time that it is not a good idea to have a screen on the exhaust. Just looking to get some feedback on this subject. Has anyone also done this? Has anyone come across any problems by doing this?
Thanks

Do not cover. It is no different than a motor exhaust It must breath. You can certainly cover during winter storage.

Great picture!
Unfortunately: I think it would be best to leave it off when you're using your RV.
But for storage: it sure looks like a winner!

Fortunately my only winter camping is in Florida. I just changed out my 13500 AC with a 15k AC HEAT PUMP. Haven't tried the heat pump yet but next week in Daytona we will have a high in the 60s and I will try it then.
I often thought if I could mount the screen with a hinge so when using the furnace you just open it. When done you just secure it in place again. Those little springs they give you are a pain.

We like our 15K heat pump equipped AC unit, and I bet that you will also!

I’ve have had a similar one on my Vegas and Axis for the last six years and have never taken it off with no problems. I also have screens on my hot water heater and refrigerator. In Florida you need them on all three.

Yep. This is what prompted me to install screens on the furnace and water heater exhausts on my old fiver shortly after moving to FL.

Boy. Roasted frog legs. Critters that large will not be able to get in your refrigerator vents, but wasps and other flying creatures can.

Same on my Hurricane...
Made my own screen to cover vent for water heater... Bought ones for furnace and fridge vents.
Never had an issue in Michigan without then... but added before our first snowbird trip years ago - and been on ever since now full time in FL.

a number of years ago, a dealer told us...in order to prevent bugs/wasps getting in vents/under hood/compartments/ac...
get cow ear tags which have bug repellent infused in them...hang one wherever you might need one...we did and they work !

Cover them
I have covered mine since new in 2015. In Ohio we use the furnace in the spring and fall and have never had any problems with the furnace. Used them with my Sunseeker prior to this - NEVER had a problem.

Me as well for 2 yrs. You do have make sure the mesh is not so tight as to restrict flow. Other posters will likely find this in error but I haven't had any problems except the board - which got wet, corroded and stopped working. The newer board raises it up off the mounting platform where water once collected. A bead of caulk around the top portion of the frame stopped that little nuisance.

This is correct. I also found them in my engine's air cleaner. If you have the V10 and remove the air cleaner housing, you will see two holes in the bottom (to drain any water?). They, the wasps (mud daubers), wormed their way in and made themselves a cozy little home. After doing the wasp battle to get rid of them, I covered that and my fridge vent as well. And don't forget the water heater vent.

I'd like someone, ever, just one time, on the entire internet, make a real case for not using the screen on a vent like we have.
There's a lot of
'I would not do this ever', but no substance presented ever.
I use the large cut stainless steel wool like used as kitchen sink scrubbers. Stuff it in a hole. Now there is no more hole and less than 2%+- added restriction.
It cuts or expands well, becoming a pad/plug of whatever size needed.

I have had screens in my heater vents since 1999 covering 3 different rigs. No problems.
