Can we move exhaust pipe from side to back?

The exhaust pipe sticking out the side of the RV looks like an accident waiting to happen! Is it possible to move it so it comes out the back?

That looks like the exhaust pipe from your generator. If so, mine (and I think most) are the same way, coming out on the driver side. During a camping trip I don't spend much time on that side of the rv so it's never really been a concern for me. I'm sure it could be re-routed, but I don't know what problems the extra distance the exhaust would have to travel could cause. I'm sure someone else with more knowledge will have an answer.

Putting extra weight on the exhaust pipe hangars might be an even larger accident waiting to happen...
Crack that pipe up underneath the bodywork, and...
My advice: learn to walk around it, and keep it simple.

It was an accident on our Citation.
Unlike yours ours exists on the driver side.
My choice was to sideswipe the concrete construction barrier OR the cone that was knocked out of line. The cone bent the exhaust from 90* to 180*
straightened it and put a metal zip tie on it "On The Road Again"

Looks like a trip to a hardware store for a couple ft of 1" electric conduit, a clamp and a exhaust hanger will get the pipe sticking out the back

met a family in outer banks that had his piped to roof, it did cut down on some noise and put the exhaust up high. Seen a few videos on yourtube where the did it to keep exhaust above everyone making dyi setups.

Nothing wrong with that at all. You asked, and I suggest based on the questions nuance.
I have to assume you don't weld or swage or bend tubing at home.

This is $100 tops at a muffler shop.
They'll weld and clamp and brace based on years and years of 10,000 jobs completed.

If it offends thee, pluck it out.
$100 and you'll never have to think if of it again.

Appreciate the suggestions and replies. Will let my husband know and he can be the judge on this one! Seems there can be several factors involved.

We are still just checking out the basics of our newly purchased RV and trying to learn as much as possible before we actually head out in a few months. Some things don't make much sense to us, and other things we are hoping to modify if possible!

Of course, there is no offense taken from us, we are open to all suggestions and willing to learn from others with experience & knowledge we don't have. This RV is quite a different world than our travel trailer, so we appreciate all input!

And you are correct ducksface....I (the wife) don't have any welding, swage (whatever that is!) or tube bending experience, so I appreciate the insight to give a safe and reasonable fix.
I'm kind of jumping the gun with questions about our new Thor, (before asking my hubby about my concerns, but......wouldn't it make me sound pretty smart if I gave him some "fix it" ideas?? hahaha....)

In reality, I am very interested to learn as much as I can about the workings of this new "home away from home" we will be undertaking!

No it still exits to the side.
Our generator is in the front behind the driver door.

Whatever you decide to do don't let it exit under you mh

Hello ready2travel, My generator exhaust pipe ran out the back. I did not like it. The slide comes out the back and I felt like the carbon Monoxide could make it into the sleeping area. I also wanted to add a mud flap/windshield protector for the toad. The pipe was in the way. There are 2 bolts that hold the ehaust pipe to the flange or head of the generator. Losen them and the exhaust pipe will rotate. Move the hanger bracket to where it will hold the pipe. Tighten bolts and all done. Now mine comes out the side by an inch and I like it. I can now add a gen-turi pipe to run the exhaust up to the roof if needed.

You need to watch how much extra pipe would be added to exit to the rear - extra length means more backpressure on the generator which can cause problems with the generator. Other thing to consider is where the exhaust is relative to your window openings.

Most of them come out under the big slide. It is a serious safety defect if you run the gen on cold still nights as CO comes into coach around slide. Be sure to close slide if doing that.

I also have a 24ST. both exhaust pipes are straight out the back. Obviously it's not a problem to exhaust the genny that way Neither exhaust pipe should end under a slide room.

Saw an Rv at dealers had a warning label on BR window that window should be closed when genny was running. RV side exhaust below the window.

My exhaust has a 'dogleg' probably just to position the pipe. That pipe may be available from Thor, it was OEM on my 2016. Convince them "it shudda been that way"..

Our exhaust pipe does come out under a BR window, no slide. Actually all three sides in the back have a window, so I imagine any relocation isn't going to do us much good for that problem. Didn't see any warning stickers, however it is 6 years old with 2 previous owners.
It also exhausts on the passenger side, where we would be sitting under the awning. Hadn't thought about that being a potential problem.

Sounds like a visit to the muffler man will be on the calendar soon!

Read the Onan installation manual for your generator. The one for our Challenger’s generator has some very explicit instructions and warnings related to the exhaust and how changes can impact generator operation.

The manual can be downloaded and it is not the same as the operating manual.

24ST -No slide at the back and the rear window does not open so not a concern.
