chf

Hello everyone ! I just done the chf on my 2017 Challenger 36 tl today. The front was quite a job,
but got it done. I have to take it to the dealer for
some issues to be fixed Wednesday next week, so
I am anxious to see what the response will be as
far as handling. Will check back in and let everybody
know what the difference is if any.

So long for now ! have a good one !

What was difficult in doing the chf. Normally its a 15 minute job unless youre removing tge sway bar and lubing the poly bushing

The CHF (both front and rear) was certainly no 15 minute job for me, and I even had my buddy helping me. Heck, we had 15 minutes invested in slithering in and out from under the darn suspension to grab the right tools!

Our CHF was about an hour and a half total, split over 2 days because I didn't fit very well under the rear. :-)

Hi Jerry ! Well when you push the sway bar up to line up with the link, you
can't get the bolt back in, because the leaf spring is in the way. So, I had
to take the top bolt out of the link and assemble the link to the sway bar
at the bottom first and jack up the sway bar to get the bolt in at the top.
The rear was real simple, took about 15 minutes.

Hmmm Sorry it wasnt an easy job. I didnt have that problem with mine. Guess every coach is different. Think it took me about an hour to do both front and back. Back was harder because i didnt have a lot of room to work in and i did it by myself. Good you got it done.

I also needed to use a scissors jack to move the sway bar to the new position to fit the links. It wasn't much, but the sway bar wouldn't budge without some mechanical help.

I used a bottle jack to raise the sway bar. Ive since pulled the sway bar off and lubed the bushings with poly lube. Now i can move tge sway bar with just my hand.

Dont know why Ford doesnt lube the bushings.

Are the Z bars on back supposed to come out if the bushings? Mine are not budging.

Ours did, made it a little easier. Looks like you just need to reverse it and reattach. You may want to lube it while it is free.

Tried reversing. No go. Bolts aren't turning in the bushhing. Will WD 40 affect the rubber parts?

I had the same problem with the frozen z bolts on my coach. WD 40 won't hurt anything. I sprayed the bolts with penetrating oil, screwed the nut back on until it was flush with the threads, then used repeated hammer blows alternated with more penetrating oil, finally came loose. Most people don't have a problem, they just slide right out. My problem was composed by having the links frozen on the upper mounts too, fortunately they came loose easier. I feel your pain!!!

Found the problem. The grippers on the bolt extend too far out and are engaging the bushing, not allowing it to turn freely.

If you can zoom in you can see the indentations in the bushing.

Shouldn't these be free wheeling?

I put a washer between bushing and z bar bolt. Now the ridges bite into the washer and that allows the bushing to move. When the temperature gets below 110°, I'll crawl back under there and get picture if anyone wants one. I live out in the desert by the Marine Corps Training Center 29 Palms,CA. and it's HOT, HOT, HOT.

I can see dealing with the heat, but what I can't understand is how you guys survive the dry air. Anything below 10% feels like an oven that sucks the water right out of your body. Being from Florida and Texas I like humidity.

I spent a few days in Ridgecrest not too far from there, and went for a 30~40 mile bike ride with a few guys from China Lake NAWS and it about did me in. I couldn't drink water fast enough; eventually running out before getting back. Fortunately the last few miles into town were downhill.

The desert, particularly as you get closer to Death Valley, is a different world I have a lot of respect for.

Just a follow up on chf. As posted last week, well drove to the dealer for some other issues to be fixed and IMO it helped maybe about 30 % with roll and sway, but I am not going to waste my money on a road master rear sway bar that is only an 1/8 of an inch larger than the one on there now. Just my opinion.
