Dash Cam

Who uses a dash cam? What brand/model/extras do you think are best? With so much liability exposure I want to be able to prove the other jerk was responsible.

The other thing I want to do is download some beautiful vids and stills from nice trips going down the road. How many times do you wish you could describe something you saw from through windshield?

I used to use a small Sony video camera on a dash mount. I liked that as I could grab it out of the truck for other video duties.

I picked up a Yi Ultra Dashcam for use in the RV last fall about the time I put it away for the winter. Did make a couple of videos with it, however:

(Here is 19 minutes of me driving the RV back from a local campground...What really strikes me about this video is how much the Axis rocks back and forth--that is probably exaggerated because I had the dashcam mounted up high)

Keep in mind that if you're in an accident and it happens to be your fault you are legally required to provide the video evidence. It can either help or hurt.

I'm not afraid of that. I also carry a firearm most places. I'll protect myself responsibly whether a pistol or a camera.

Exclamation

Our vehicles were rear-ended THREE TIMES in a period of about 18 months. We bought a dashcam from the "Kim Komando" radio show shop. It has two lenses - a wide angle that faces forward, and a narrower angle facing the rear. We've been using it religiously, whether in the RV, my truck, or the wife's SUV. It's easily moved from vehicle to vehicle. The model we have is no longer available, but there are plenty of dual-lens models available.

I have this GPS/Dash cam combo and it works great:
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/168820
nüviCam™ LMTHD
I like having the GPS up higher so its more in my field of vision.

I’m looking at the YI and the Apeman cameras. But they don’t have rechargeable batteries. Does anyone use a rechargeable one?

I bought a cheap one a couple of years ago. And use it every time I drive the truck.

The Yi Ultra plugs in the dash--it does have a small battery (which it recharges automatically) but its primary power source is from a USB cable. The small battery is so that it can do an orderly shutdown once power is removed (its all automatic, once you set it up you just leave it there and it comes on with the ignition and goes off shortly after the ignition is shut off).

Unless you're like me and save all the recordings from the RV trip (need A LOT of storage at home for that LOL).

We got a dash cam specifically for our Class A; however it has 3 electrical cord options so we switch it between the MH and our Toad. We have the Rexing X1V+ from Best Buy. It has front and rear cameras with an 18 foot cord on the rear-too short for the MH but fine for the Toad. The monitor is small at 2.5 inches but includes the mini-chip with an adapter to use in the standard size reader. Plugging that into a tablet or laptop works great. Picture quality is excellent with a 160 degree front field of vision; 120 for the back cam. Power cords are a fused plug direct from your fuse panel, a USB plug, and finally, a cigarette lighter plug and cord. It has a 4-hour loop with crash detection to auto-save the data. You can also lock segments with the touch of a button, and turn the microphone on or off. It also has an option for still pictures if you are so inclined. It has a short battery backup but with all the power cord options you shouldn't need it.

We tried an adapter using the USB cord in the cigarette socket due to that being a shorter cord-it did not work with that arrangement, but works fine with the three supplied cords.

We would recommend this unit-it also has a separate GPS tracker if you want to add it as a plug-in option.

We have one in every vehicle...even the golf cart. Division Bell is how you want to use it. Some accept larger GB cards than others and quality of resolution varies (affects length of recording time). If you wish to record long journeys, go big. Our biggest concern is capturing the moment and the ability to "loop". The ones I have stay turned on all the time and actually record 24/7. Good security when away for the day. In July, when my wife had a really bad crash (head on by a rental truck running 60) her cam was running...it's a big player in our actions going forward for recovery. Mine are the Cobra Dash 2208 and come with a variety of mounts. They will stream to the phone up to about 100 feet.

I bought this in 2018 for $50.00 you can aim the 2 cameras in multiple directions, front &/or rear, record with one or both, sound or silent.

Here is a short 6 minute video from my Yi dashcam of the beach drive in Cape May, NJ (in a car):

Here is a short clip on the Axis' front windshield of Turkeys at the Pinery Provencial park in Ontario:

I use older models of that yi cam.
It has its own little wifi system that hooks to your phone.
It makes for an excellent rear facing camera you can see through your phone or tablet.

I'm very slightly considering putting one over my gas cap for easier alignment at a gas pump and the sewer and water hookups.

I have one under my offroad vehicle as a rock cam.

If a battery is important just plug it into an always live USB plug instead of a switched plug.
This makes an internal battery VERY unimportant.

Thanks.
I really try to make life easy if I'm given the chance.

I'm really not much for following an owners manual in a fashion where the manual is an idea limiter switch.
