Renogy had a sale a couple months back and I picked up two 160W flexible panels and the Rover 30A MPPT Controller for my Outlaw 29H. I’ve been busy the past several weeks and just finally got around to installing it.
We don’t boondock very much but I also wanted it to keep the batteries charged and not always needing to keep the rig plugged into AC when it’s sitting idle.
A few months ago I installed the 5A Trik-L-Start charger that keeps the chassis battery maintained from the house batteries. It has worked great so the solar will now also keep my chassis battery topped off in addition to the house batteries.
I went with the flexible panels because I just didn’t want to drill holes in the roof and was unsure of the mounts that don’t require drilling. I also like that I could max out at 320W with only 2 panels and weight of these panels is negligible.
I know I won’t get the max efficiency because they lie flat and can’t be tilted but the install was a breeze using Eternabond roof tape.
I also went with the more expensive MPPT Controller because the panels can be connected in series or parallel in addition to excellent battery maintenance with four charging modes plus fault protection.
Having the Thor prewired solar also made it fairly easy. I still have to mount the controller because I wanted to fully test the system before mounting it. I decided to mount it behind the TV in the garage / master bedroom. I was able to run the wires through an existing hole for the TV HDMI cable and then down into the electronics area where the solar prewiring terminated. I also tapped into the battery cables there as well.
Here are a few pics of it so far and I will post a few more when I get the Controller and Bluetooth Module minted. It’s working very well and already went through the charging, boost and float cycles. The equalization cycle runs every 28 days.
