Increasing Grey Tank Capacity: Siesta 24ST

I have a 2018 Siesta 24ST, which has a 24 gallon grey tank. That has always been the Achilles heel of longer boondocking trips. I've noted in the Thor brochure that the OTHER models of the 24, such as the SS, have 38 gallon tanks, and I'm curious as to how they achieve this. My tank has gigantic length and width, but a ridiculously small depth, in order to fit between the chassis and house frame members (Its low point is an actual FOOT higher than that for the black tank, which is constructed to extend below the frame members and into the wet bay.) Beyond the problem of small capacity, the shallow shape of the grey tank makes for not only slow draining at the dump site, but inability to get it fully drained unless I'm parked nose-down (when nose up, we can actually get grey water backup into the shower pan even if the tank is only 25% full.)

I've seen some other threads here where people have sought to install larger tanks, and I can see how the frame members would likely prevent installation of a deeper tank. Some folks have plumbed a second tank to parallel the first and flow into it, and that might work here, as there is a second empty space up in the frame that might hold a 12 gallon tank, if it was as shallow as the first. That MIGHT help with the slow draining at the dump station, and maybe with the shower drain problem as well, since the shower drain would still be plumbed into the forward tank.

Has anyone out there found a solution to the small tank problem? And just curious, how do all the other Siesta 24 models seem to be able to carry a 38 gallon grey tank while the 24ST is 24 (not to mention their 38 gallon black, while mine is 22)? Could any owner of those models show me how their tanks are situated? Thanks.

Why not just use environmentally friendly soaps in the sink and shower?
You could dump into a five gallon pail, and dispose of it when the need arose?

Call Thor and ask this question. They are the designers and builders of the model.

EA37: Yes, I've made the same inquiry to Thor, but during the pandemic I've gotten replies as much as a month later. Someone out there with another model 24 might have the info at their fingertips. I am suspecting that perhaps on the other models, Thor rerouted the cable running under the tank area (possibly the emergency brake cable?) which would open up LOTS more depth room for the tank.

I don't think that "Mother M" would allow Thor to modify their chassis parts very much...

If you're serious about gray water, hook an ro unit and a reserve tank to your gray tank.
Unlimited water at ZERO PPM if you're serious. Discharge water goes through a .2 micron filter and right back to the reserve tank.
Under $900.

(And, as said in every thread about this subject: the slightest change in habits always nets some great water conservation.)

Gray tanks are used for cost reasons(and some people can't be educated no matter what size of progress stick you beat them with). It's just a cesspool, same as 2,000 years ago. There is a better way to handle it.

Ducksface: That's something interesting to consider! You say to install a reserve tank: Is that instead of simply returning the water to the fresh water tank? Is it still not drinking water quality when it comes out? Does the reserve tank get plumbed back to the water pump? Do you have any recommendations re brand or supplier? Thanks !

I'm wrestling with the same situation 40FW/22GW/25BW tanks in my 28A. I'm looking at the Smart Bottle Boondocking system that has 3 5 gallon collapsible jugs and a transfer pump that uses a cordless drill.

https://smartbottleinc.com/product/new-boondocking-kit/

Also a 45 gallon waste water portable tank.

My thinking is hauling a small trailer that would have the waste tank in it. Use a macerator pump to get the waste water into the tank without having to haul it out, and especially, back into the trailer.

Get a collapsible 5 gal jug or two
And add a sewer cap with hose connection
Then take a short garden hose and empty your grey water into the collapsible jug
Empty in any toilet at gas station or public restroom

Now that’s not illegal

BTW...My rig is 42 fresh, 30 black, 40 grey

Wayne: That should work for your situation. I've really got several problems I'm trying to solve: not only a small grey tank, but a too shallow one, that can flow up the shower drain in a nose up situation even if only 20% full. Has anyone with a 24ST tried plumbing an additional small tank in the wet bay (4-5 gallon would fit if shaped right) so its low point would be closer to the y-valve and low point of the black tank? The shallow tank could drain into that to help minimize shower drain problems, and I would at least get a 20% increase in grey capacity.

Taylorbob: also a good suggestion. Even siphoning off 3-5 gallons for later dumping could be enough to keep my feet dry in th e shower!

Yes, the water is perfect and could go right into the fresh water tank.
The last time I metioned such a thing as recycling ro water, even just for the shower, I was retorted with 'thats icky.

It'd be better than any water you'll get from some slimy well at
Imas' church of the dewy death and discount rv park, or even the most lux parks.

I have a couple of iSpring systems.
I'm very happy with them and their products.

Gain some space by washing dishes in a pan and dump soapy water in the toilet. Another option, get a blue tote to drain gray water. Should fit in pass thru compartment.
Tanks on other 24 ft models are based on layout. Some have 2 black tanks and a clumbsy cross chassis drain. Our 24ST has 63 cubic feet of storage, while the 24SR has 39 cuft but bigger tanks.
FWIW I have not had water back up into shower, level ground my rig slight nose down.

Hi Steve

I have a 2018 Thor Siesta 24SS and have never had an issue with the grey water backing up into the shower when parked. You might have another issue with the plumbing. I do understand that my unit has a larger capacity than your coach. You might think about a portable tank on wheels to help increase the capacity when at a campsite that has dump stations. Remember that the bathroom sink usually drains into the black tank while your kitchen sink drains into your grey tank along with your shower. Maybe the designers at Thor had your coach in mind for very short duration trips and that is the reason they installed the smaller holding tanks?

Paul

Paul: Yes, the 24SS has a 38 gallon grey tank, while mine is 24 gallons. Makes a big difference in boondocking range ! I'm hoping Thor can enlighten me in how the difference was achieved. Is your grey tank a single tank, or two tanks plumbed together?
