Jensen Car 1000

I’m replacing the axxera unit with this Jensen 1000. It does not appear to have a button to manually turn on the backup camera. Only works when MH is put in reverse.
I saw somewhere a post when a toggle switch was installed to turn the camera on and off. Cant find it now. I assume I need to find the signal that feeds the Jensen and tap into that. I’m fine with disabling the automatic feature of turning the camera on with reverse circuit so as to avoid needing to install any diodes. Just want to convert it to a completely manual system..
Anybody done this?

The "camera" view is selected by a trigger when the vehicle is put in reverse. This trigger normally comes from the reverse lighting circuit but in a standard Thor 3 camera configuration it comes from the camera selection box where the 3 cameras inputs are selected and fed to the radio camera in. In your radio you just need to provide +12 VDC to the trigger wire in the radio's wiring harness (the brown wire) to turn the camera view on. You can do this through a manual switch in parallel to the trigger source from the camera selection box but I would add a diode in that line to prevent backfeeding the box. It probably wouldn't matter, but unless you obtain the box schematics I would do it just to be safe.

1 diode
1 SPST switch
1 Fused 12 VDC positive source lead.

Thanks Ted. So do you believe that brown wire is connected to the back up light circuit, thus providing the 12 volt source to that brown wire when activated?
If so, couldn’t I just cut the brown wire, leave it disconnected on the brake light side, find a 12 volt source and wire it to the radio side via the toggle..?

The brown wire is on the radio harness. The trigger from the camera box should be connected to it but I don't know what color that wire is.

Your manual says:

Between that and the schematic I conclude that when 12 VDC is applied to the brown wire on the radio harness it triggers the rear camera view.

You don't have to connect the trigger wire from the camera selection box. You could simply wire 12 VDC to the brown wire and it will display the camera view all the time. Put a SPST switch in that line and then you have manual control as to when the camera view is displayed.

Thanks again Ted.. I’ve got the new Jensen in hand and will check this out when it warms up at least past 20 degrees out there.. Here is the diagram for the unit. Wondering what the “reverse” wire is for on the 20 pin harness..

I didn't see that down there until you pointed it out. That has to be the camera trigger wire and the 12 V and GND wires on the camera input harness must be to power a camera. You won't need those as the camera selector box provides power to your cameras.

Wouldn't it be great if the manual covered that?

On my Freedom Traveller, which is similar to Ace, the backup cam comes on when the emergency flashers are turned on. People following me may think I’m nuts, but I will occasionally switch the emergency flashers on, while driving, to check my trailer and it’s cargo, as I go down the road.

Jensen Car1000 install issue

2015 Vegas 24.1. Pulled out the Axxera 615 multimedia unit to replace it with a new Jensen Car1000. Plugged in the existing 20 pin connector to the new Jensen and NO power. I put the Axxera back in and NO power.. I have 12volts at the 20 pin connector. The 15amp fuse is good on both units. What am I missing? The Axxera was working prior to this.. MH is plugged into shore power, use switch is ON and again, I’ve got 12volts to the back of the 20 pin connector (red wire).

Do you think the 20 pin connector for the Axerra is wired the same way as the one for the Jensen? I doubt. I'm surprised it even fit but there's no telling what got shorted.

The 20 pin connector is identical. The red and black wires are in the same location in the connector. Nothing is shorted Ted, I'm just missing something here and need to find someone that has made this swap. I know there are several.

Red comes from the "ignition", you should also have + 12 VDC on the yellow wire.

Have you checked your ground?
What are you using to check for 12v?

Man, this thing is making me crazy. I’ve broken something, I just can’t figure out what.. There is power to the cigar sockets and it’s associated fuse is good. I don't believe the yellow wire gets it’s power from this circuit. In fact, I’m not convinced the yellow wire plays any role at all. It might an either or? I do have 12 volts at the RED wire. While this wire is labeled “ignition” it is controlled by the use/store switch.. When that switch is OFF, the 12 volts goes away. This is how it’s supposed to work I believe.. Why would I need 2 sources of 12 volts (red and yellow wires)?. So, I’m at a loss and looking for more help..

Just an idea and maybe you did this already.

Print out the wire diagram for the Axxera 615 and the Jensen Car1000. Then verify that the wire functions match up for the 20 pin connector.

Just an idea to try. I hope it helps.

So very true. I would look at the wiring for the Jenson and see what you fried.

Yep, I have the two harness diagrams for the 20 pin connector. Spliced in easy enough. Wires and descriptions were an exact color match but there were differences in the locations on the connector.. Using my volt meter, I’m able to read 12 volts across the RED (12v) and BLACK (ground) coming out of the 20pin connector. Zero across the Yellow and Ground..
