Max trailer hitch on the Hurricane

So what is the maximum trailer hitch I can install on my 2014 F53 chassis?

I have a 5000 lb hitch now and want to upgrade to a 8000lb. Anyone do this!?

You can do this (and Thor made the 8,000 lb hitch standard in later years) but you will still have the GCWR limit, and 500 Lb tongue weight limit due to the frame extension.

Ford 2015 F-53 specifications (available on the Internet) show the max trailer towed weight 22,000 lb chassis to be 4,000 lb.

MORryde Inc. does the chassis modifications for Thor Industries plant 750 where your coach was built. It would best to check with MORryde to see if there welded frame extension can handle the extra load.

That 4000 lbs is only the limit if the coach is at GVWR. If it's under GVWR then he can tow more.

Coincidentally, I needed to replace the hitch on my 2019 34J.

I had placed the order with Thor (Gil is great) just before reading your question. I didn’t have any details to offer at the time. But it just arrived today.

Item 0312096 Hitch, Lippert 8,000 LBS, ford/Chevy/Fred heavy duty chassis, w/7-way plug.

Set me back ~ $450 before tax & shipping…

I’ve got an 8000 lb hitch on mine. But since my GCVw is 22000 lbs. And my loaded GVW is 15,980. I can only tow about 6000 lbs. Nurse, you need to subtract your loaded weight from your GCWR. My bet is you can only tow 4000 to 5000 lbs. Towing over your GCWR puts you at risk for a catastrophic failure. Frame. Welds/bolts. Brakes. Drivetrain. But that’s up to you.
