New Radio

After 2 trips in my Vegas. I could not take that lousy Axxera factory radio. So today I swapped it out for the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. I am SO happy I did! Here are the advantages:
  1. It supports Carplay. I can use my iPhone from the touch screen
  2. It has a lot brighter video screen
  3. It can angle the video screen to prevent glare.
  4. I changed the display color to red to support night vision.
  5. The AM/FM has better reception.

So what did I do with the three input cameras? I had them run it into the unit and put 3 switches in that useless box at the bottom of the console. YES, I give up the automatic switching of cameras. But I found that I rarely used the left/right ones and now it is easier to flip on the revers camera.

Anyone who want my old Axxera can have it for the price of boxing and shipping. Sold "as is".

Gbrown,

Will you post costs of the MOD and time needed to do the deed?

DocMike,
Radio: $599
Cables: $25
Labor $175
Total $853 with tax

You can find the radio online for less. But I really like and trust this installer. He took 3 hours which includes the 3 switches in the cubby hole.

Gbrown,

Thanks for the info and costs. I have been a bit disappointed with the Axxera's display.

I installed a computer system using 120V last year but I have been seeing alot about 12V systems that can be mounted in the space of the Axxera.

Still looking and there are a few more MODs to finish up with before striking out on a new one.

Keep the rest of us posted on how your MOD goes.

Let's hear more about your computer system. I will be switching to full-time mobile in a year. I am running my MacBook Pro off of the 12V system. I have been so dissappointed with RV Park WiFi that I just use my cellphone data plan.

gbrown,

Did you coach not have the Jensen camera switch installed with the 3 cameras and Axxerra radio and if so why not use it again instead of the three switches?

In the Vegas, the Axxera has 3 camera inputs. The Pioneer only has 1.

That is interesting. Why would Thor use three inputs on the Axxerra radio for the Vegas but on the Challenger they connect the three cameras into a controller and then run a single cable to the Axxerra?

Here is the link to the controller that is used on the Challenger.

Voyager Multi-Camera Controller

Did your side view camera automatically come on with the respective turn signal or did you have to manually engage them? On the Challenger the turn signal triggers the controller to display the respective left or right camera.

Dave,
Yes, the side cameras automagically came on with the turn signals.

Gbrown,

In so far as my computer go to Thor Motor Coach Class A etc, etc... on this Forum (in the third section of the main page). Then go to outside TV thread and work your way down the thread. You will see what I did and what has popped up as available options.

I too am frustrated with the radio. I'm still trying to figure out the no signal message. When I put it in store mode...the radio doesn't turn on...but the camera works sometimes. The whole set up is just so cumbersome.

The no signal message is common when the radio is in camera mode and the ignition switch is turned off. The radio is not receiving a signal from the camera.

The radio is connected to the house batteries and should not work if the coach is in store mode.

Our Axxera has a mode button in the upper left corner...press that buttom and the rear camera comes on...again and again to access right or left camera...
I have adjusted the screen, etc. Since we have not been out on the road for an extended trip yet...I cannot say whether or not we are accepting the Axxera ... however...for us...if it plays cd's and delivers a decent feed to the Sony speakers...bluetooth delivers...sd/usb readers deliver...for now, we are good to go !

Even when it is not in store mode I get a no signal.

My first RV had a camera system independent of radio. It was real nice. I really like this set up better.

Your Axxera comes on, correct ? When not in Store ...

Have you used the mode button?

OK...I went out to our Axis...in Store mode the radio comes on..but, if you access the camera it sez...no signal...so I started motor...and a warning comes up...'Driver should not view screen' .. tell me how it knew I was sitting in driver
side !!! ??

Our coach is on leveling blocks right now, so I did not put it in gear...
our cameras work fine when we are/have been moving/in gear.

Try these options...if still, no signal, I defer to some of the others on this forum.

The screen brightness is, in itself, the best reason to ditch the Axxera

I had adjusted it. But that and the glare were too much. The radio was OK. But the cameras were not bright at all.

Understood...just like so many things...some are good some are lemons. Our camera reception/resolution/brightness are very good.
Enjoy the new radio and all its goodies !
